Sharks fin and meat

"Carrefour to stop selling shark's fin too after current stock runs out"

Cultural issues aside, I'm glad NTUC and Carrefour will stop importing shark's fin once stock runs out. I agree this is a politically correct move, maybe untimely, with two weeks to the start of Chinese New Year. I wonder where this real political pressure is coming from? I am aware sharks are disposed back into sea (and automatically become free food for scavengers) after fisherman chop off, get their share of Shark's fins. And seeing that sharks are on the endangered list yes I am all for it.

If torture is what makes one tick, then the ones making a whoohaa about this should just convert to vegan-ism. A the same time I acknowledge most of the animals we eat also suffer miserable deaths, I can't ignore the fact that in slaughter houses, it's common that animals get their throats slit and to speed up the process they are hung upside down.... and then finally choking to death on their own blood. Like I said if torture angers you the most, then you have to admit that the animals you eat and approve of endure no less a tragic death than a shark.

It is really annoying to know that people in the new age movement who have a tendency for anthropomorphising many living things, have a tendency themselves to eat delicious cooked or raw meat. Fact remains that humans can survive on a 100% meat-free diet. There is just so much hypocrisy. You notice pet lovers having no qualms whatsoever over the killing of a cockroach or crab or whatever. ( I am one of them ) there is just no individual moral equilibrium for meat eaters when it comes to animal rights. We are just bias human beings who have a soft spot for certain species, and for many - no empathy at all. Even though it may be obvious that animals can feel pain, but cannot make sense of it as much as humans can. Who would really care if cockroaches, moths or mosquitoes go extinct?

You know there is no excuse not to be a Vegan, when you think about the mass slaughter of animals everyday just to feed people like myself and many others. If you're a meat eater who is against the shark trade, then there really isn't much to feel good about yourself. Like that famous Vegan, I can't remember his name.... But he said something along the lines of... "there's no humane way to kill an animal, is there such thing as humane rape?"

I'm not quite sure about assisted suicide or euthanasia for animals, but it probably would cost more, and no one cares.

And on a side note my friend not because of cultural context, decided to get ordained as a monk in Thailand, yes the monks there actually eat meat donated to them by temple visitors.... duh why wouldn't they not? Meat is delicious.

ramblings, shark's fin, feelings splattered, meat, memories
