Merlin 4x01

Let me start by saying how very glad I am to have Merlin back. I really do adore this cast.

So this is by no mean a detailed review or anything, it's just a few random reactions/thoughts to the first episode of Season 4. So....

- The slightly different opening (Merlin is now refered to as a 'young man' rather than a 'young boy')

- Loved the new title sequence

- Absolutely adore having all of Arthur's 'Round Table' Knights as regulars this season, particulary Gwaine, with his sense of fun and charm and all round sexiness! ;-)

- Also pleased to see Lancelot too. Not because of the whole Arthur/Gwen/Lancelot thing but because it's great having someone else who knows Merlin's magical secret. Lancelot's support and loyalty to Merlin is wonderful to watch.

- Morgana's new look is interesting, with her wild hair and all-in-black ensemble.

- Thought that it was very cool showing a glimpse of the 'Final Battle' with Excalibur and 'Emrys' in Morgana's vision.

- Those things that were released out of the veil were creepy as hell and the noise they made was very disturbing.

- When the hen jumped out from behind that hay, I was one of the people that nearly had a heart-attack. Seriously, it made me jump a mile! LOL

- Bradley and Colin really acted their socks off in this episode. Both of them had some very emotional and poignant moments and conveyed them beautifully.

- That conversation between Merlin and Arthur at the end, just before Merlin bravely flung himself into harm's way...oh boys. I could have hugged them both. Arthur's comment about Merlin being a brave man was very sweet.

However...

There were a couple of things that bothered me slightly I guess:

- After Merlin had seen the Cailleach and collapsed, we never saw Arthur coming to check on him or had him asking Merlin later if he was alright. Now maybe they filmed something and it was just edited for time, I don't know but it bothered me. In previous episodes, we've seen both of the boys visit each other when something's happened to one of them. At the very least, they've expressed concern for the other's well-being but this time, nothing at all from Arthur. I found it a bit strange, given the nature of their relationship, that he basically ignored it.

- I adore the Merlin/Arthur banter dearly, it's a natural and at times, adorable part of their friendship but I do think that the writers need to be careful that Arthur's 'teasing' doesn't sometimes, almost veer more into 'bullying' territory.

All in all though, quite an epic start to Season 4 and I look forward to the next eppy on Saturday! :-)
