So, I found out from somewhere (which I couln’t quite remember where, though I’m pretty sure it’s a fic somewhere in LJ) that Shiba family WAS one of Soul Society noble family.
From another fic, someone was calling Isshin “Shiba-taichou” and the man answered saying that no one had called him such since his brother died.
And I recall that in yet another fic, Ise Nanao mentioned that Isshin was a grandson/great-grandson of Yamamoto.
(grin)
So, EoD adapted those three ideas.
And here’s some byproduct.

1. Family Tree
Yamamoto Genryuusai had had a son. A young man who inherited his father’s power and his mother’s looks, who disagreed with his father in almost every matter-including the choice of life partner-and finally denounce his father, quit being shinigami, married the said life partner, and took her surname as his.
The said young man later had a son, whom later on had sons-and a daughter too-and live a relatively mundane life, without ever tried to become a shinigami.
The first son was a brilliant child-if somewhat too laid-back and lazy-with exceptional spiritual power. He got along well with several child, also from noble families, who-oddly enough-are with peculiar qualities such as the boy himself. Along with his friends, he blasted through Shinigami Academy, graduate, and later became a captain of Gotei 13.
The second son, who has more responsibility to his own person and family-which his brother lacked, also went to Shinigami Academy. With more sedate and graceful pace than his brother, he paved his way and became a vice-captain.
The daughter, third child of the family, was born with a handicap. But not with lack of spiritual power. She decided not to follow her brother’s footsteps. She made friends outside the nobility that was her family’s usual acquaintance. She made her own path, and she was happy with it.
The youngest son, the least powerful of them, the most innocent, simple and-deep inside, despite the tough act-the most kinda hearted of them all, hadn’t had enough time to know the father he took after so much. Loosing one brother at such early age, never had a chance to know the other brother, raised by a somewhat over-dominant-if not dictatoric-sister, he grew up hating shinigamis, and follow up his sister’s track.
To Yamamoto’s chagrin, the family tree didn’t stop right there.
