She turned out to be right, Ryeowook and Yesung grabbed every opportunity to meet each other, but being shy, they dragged along respectively Sungmin and Kibum, who also got to spend a lot of time together, and thus became best friends. But this state didn't last for long. After about three meetings, Kibum abruptly popped up at the Lees' house and was looking for Sungmin. When she arrived at the door, surprised even by his presence, he pulled out a single red rose from behind his back, and showed his cutest smile.

“This is for you, noona.”

“Woah... you're very kind... but it's not my birthday or anything...” She blushed, taking the rose and smelling it. It was not only beautiful, but had a very nice scent as well.

“I know,” was all Kibum answered, still smiling. She didn't understand, but following the habits, she invited him in, showing him around and presenting him to her parents. She didn't tell anything about their relationship, not knowing if they were juts friends or this act meant that he wanted to start courting her. From his behavior not changing, she assumed later that they were still friends. That's why it confused her when Kibum continued on with these little acts, praising her looks each time they met and giving her chocolates and flowers.
Things got clearer and more messed up at the same time, when once she was over at Ryeowook's house, having a girly talk on one of the benches in their park, and Yesung popped up. After greeting his lady, he immediately turned to her friend.

“Sungmin-sshi, can we have a talk?”

“Of course, Yesung-sshi,” she nodded, and followed him further from Ryeowook. “Do you want to talk about her?” She asked, smiling, her head tilting towards the girl still sitting on the bench. She could imagine that he was wondering how to propose to her and wanted to ask for some advice from her best friend.

“No. I want to talk about Kibum.”

“Oh. Why?” She was puzzled.

“Didn't your admirers tell you the rumors about him?”

“No, they only praise me or boast about themselves,” she grimaced. She didn't like this, but her admirers never ever talked to her about anything but these two issues, not even their counterparts, pretending as if they didn't exist, not wasting time for spreading rumors about them. Yesung sighed, then he had to tell the whole story.

“I guess you know that we're raised by our father, as our parents got divorced,” he waited until Sungmin nodded. “When it happened, Kibum was only six, and it affected him very badly. Actually, it convinced him that love is the source of all suffering, and he swore that he'd never fall in love.” Yesung looked at Sungmin worriedly, who just blinked back. The man sighed again. “What I want is to warn you not to fall in love with him.”

“I didn't intend to,” Sungmin let out a laugh to cover her embarrassment. “We're just friends.”

“I thought that he was courting you,” Yesung raised an eyebrow.

“Well... I really don't know. He's so... inscrutable,” Sungmin pouted, feeling lost. She could never translate Kibum's behavior with her, though they understood very well with other issues. Yesung nodded, sympathetic. He knew. He damn knew, Kibum was his brother after all. As there was nothing left to discuss, they silently returned to Ryeowook, who wanted to know what they talked about, but got no answer. It didn't help either if she huffed, pouted, crossed her arms and stomped and threatened them not to talk to them. It just made Yesung laugh at her and state that her girlfriend was the cutest on Earth. Well, that just made Ryeowook huff even more, but after a peck on her face, all her anger was gone to let space for a deep blush on her face. Sungmin smiled at them, a bit envious and made her leave. It wasn't the place for her, Yewook couple reached the point when they needed time on their own. She had things to do anyways: to think about her things with Kibum.

~*~*~
To make things even more complicated for Sungmin, a new admirer stepped on scene. To be honest, new admirers appeared every now and then, but Cho Kyuhyun was different. He was the living temptation. He was handsome, confident and knew exactly what he wanted. And he wanted Lee Sungmin, from the moment he saw her, no matter what it takes. He did everything to reach his goal, being seductive in all possible means and ways. And Sungmin really did find him attractive. Though, her flirting the most with Kyuhyun when he was around didn't mean he had won her heart. That would need much more. No wonder no one succeeded with that yet.

~*~*~
Kibum and his father announced that they'd be visiting the Lees on Saturday afternoon. Sungmin couldn't imagine why he wanted to visit with his father. But it turned out in five minutes after their arrival. They came to make a marriage proposal, to Sungmin's parents. Her mother got touched immediately, her only child, her 'little' daughter being asked for the hand. Her father felt honored, none of her admirers had dared yet to ask for an engagement from her parents. Knowing the fame of Kim family, he was about to agree, when it occurred to his mind that Sungmin didn't know about it in advance, or else she would've told them while they were waiting. So he said he agreed as long as his daughter wanted to. Everyone looked at her expectantly.

“I... I... May I talk to Kibummie?” She asked, hesitating. She didn't seem as puzzled as she actually was.

“Of course.” Kibum rose from the armchair and followed her to a side room opening from the living room. She halted in the middle of the room, spinning around and staring at Kibum, demanding. She blurt out.

“How do you mean it?”

“Maybe you heard the rumors of me being heartless and never falling in love...”

“They are not just rumors, right? Your brother told me that you swore for that. Hat's why I don't understand what is it?”

“Then you must've assumed that it's a marriage of convenience. Even though I vowed that I won't fall in love, my father still wants me to marry. I'll be straightforward with my reasons for choosing you, please listen to me properly before judging me.” He waited for Sungmin's nod before continuing. “I need my future wife to be clever, pretty, sweet and entertaining by my side at receptions or other business programs. As a plus, we're friends and it wouldn't kill our nerves to spend the rest of our lives together.” By that time, Sungmin was pouting and crossing her arms. She's not a doll, only capable of being put on display! Kibum sighed, looking at her expression. Having been friends with her for a while, he could imagine what she's thinking. “I know these reasons are selfish, but this has benefits for you as well. I can give you the freedom you need. As I'm not in love with you, I won't be a possessive husband. You can flirt as much as you want, it'll even be good for my business if my partners come to like you. I don't mind either if you cheat as long as you can keep it a secret.” He finished, leaving her gaping, her arms halted halfway of unfolding. Yeah, she considered freedom the most important about her future marriage, and thus Kibum's offer seemed enticing. Even if she finally fell in love, which seemed to be less and less likely by time, she could keep a lover. Well, it wasn't as she imagined, the guy who could give her enough freedom would do it not because of so much of love, but because the lack of it... but things just can't be perfect all the time, can they? She was old enough to realize that life wasn't a fairytale. Not even for her, the only daughter of a rich family. She should grab the opportunity when it came. “You don't need to answer right away. Just notify me when you decide.” Kibum said, and he was already on his leave when Sungmin's voice stopped him.

“I do,” she called out. The man turned back slowly, surprised, and uncertain how to interpret her words.

“Is it a promise that you'll inform me or the answer itself?”

“I'll marry you,” Sungmin stated, a faint smile appearing at the corner of her lips. He smiled back contentedly. That was the answer he expected, knowing her opinion about the issue. While walking back to where Sungmin was, he took a small velvet box out of his pocket, and hold it in front of her. Her hand shook as she opened it, and flinched it back right away to cover her mouth. Inside the box, as expected, an engagement ring was, but not just any engagement ring. It was simple and beautiful at the same time, made of white gold and decorated with a small shining diamond. Kibum took it out of the box, which he placed on the table and took Sungmin's shaking hand gently to slip the ring on her finger.

“Then let's tell our parents,” he proposed, released her hand and started walking towards the door again. She was snapped out of her daze by that.

“Shouldn't we hold hands at least?” She asked hesitantly, making Kibum halt.

“It depends on whether you want them to know it's a marriage of convenience.” He glanced back.

“I don't want to deceive them,” she shook her head. “I'd rather they know it.”

“As you like,” Kibum agreed, opening the door for her. As she exited, everyone's gaze were glued to her, making her embarrassed and proud at the same time. She waited until he closed the door behind her before taking a deep breath and making her announcement, showing off her ring.

“I agreed to marry him.”

“Oh, my sweetheart!” Mrs. Lee, who had been fighting her tears until that, now lost the battle and burst out crying, heading towards her daughter and hugging her tightly.

“My daughter is getting married, we need to celebrate that!” Mr. Lee exclaimed proudly. “I have a bottle of champagne saved for special events, I think it's the perfect time to open it!” He left the room to get the named drink. Mr. Kim smiled contentedly like his son, he was proud as well. From what Kibum told him about Sungmin, and seeing how pretty and cute she was, he was happy this girl was going to be his daughter-in-law. He got up to shake Kibum's hand. By the time they cooled themselves enough to settle down on the coach and in the armchairs, Mr. Lee returned with the champagne. They all clung their glasses for the health of the engaged couple, admired Sungmin's ring and spent the rest of the afternoon getting to know each other better. They compounded that they'd hold the wedding as soon as they could organize it.

~*~*~
Kyuhyun didn't mind Sungmin was engaged. He didn't care for such little things. She wasn't married yet, just wore a ring, why would that stop him from trying to get her? But he failed again and again, even though it was going to be a marriage of convenience, she already decided to be faithful. No matter how much his approach had flattered her vanity, how much he was attractive in her eyes, she didn't let things happen between them after the engagement. Kyuhyun couldn't get anything more then sexy looks and smiles, or winks, not even a kiss, which he managed to steal a few times before. Actually, they used to be answered. And heated. But there was no more of it, not for him. It bothered him very much, she missed the girl's soft lips and sweet tongue. And it pissed him off even more that her fiance didn't made his move on her. He witnessed a few times that they were quite cold for a couple, more like friends or siblings, and Kibum wasn't jealous at all seeing them flirting. Why the heck did he want to claim such a precious girl, if he didn't love her, didn't want to possess, kiss and cherish her?! Kyuhyun wanted to punch him, or shout in his face how idiot he was, but he didn't do so. Even though Kibum was younger than Sungmin, he was still older than Kyuhyun. And not lastly, also stronger.
