Prompt: Challenge 2, word prompt - pay
Summary: Kinda fluffy, kinda friend-shippy. I dunno, very mindless...Kristin and Idina laze about after rehearsal :)
Pay-Per-View
Kristin stepped outside into the L.A. sunshine and slipped her sunglasses on. "We're out early today," she said, adjusting her pony-tail. "Wonder if someone made a mistake?"
"I'm not sticking around to find out." Idina smiled.
They started walking together to the hotel, only a block up and around the corner from their rehearsal building.
"You have plans?" Idina asked.
"Plans? When you're as old as I," Kristin yawned. "Rehearsal is usually followed by laziness and sleeping."
Idina rolled her eyes. "Well, if your ancient, lazy ass wants to come over and order room service and watch pay-per-view, you're invited."
"What's on pay-per-view?"
"Dunno." Idina shrugged. "I'll let you pick."
Kristin laughed. "You must be desperate for companionship."
"Slightly."
Kristin stopped, taking hold of Idina's elbow and angling toward her. "Are you really?"
"I miss Taye." Idina tilted her head, sighing and closing her eyes. "I've never even lived by myself...being on my own these last two weeks has been..."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, it's just been weird." Idina gave her a reassuring smile. "Only a week left."
Kristin slipped her arm through Idina's and tugged her along toward the hotel. Once they were inside and had reached the elevators, Kristin unhooked her arm, pressing the call button.
"I'll get changed and I'll come down in about twenty minutes, how does that sound?"
"That's fine."
They parted ways at the third floor, Idina left the elevator as Kristin punched the sixth floor. Kristin decided on a shower first. She was just turning the water on when her phone rang and she rushed to get it, taking out her pony-tail on the way.
"Hello?"
"It's me," Idina said.
"I still have fifteen minutes."
Idina snorted. "Don't let me rush you, princess. Tell me what you want from room service so I can order."
"Now?"
"Takes an hour to come up."
"Okay, hold on." Kristin rummaged through the bedside table for the room service menu. "What are you getting?"
"Chinese chicken salad."
"You're so decadent."
"Well I'm getting onion rings too."
"What do I want, what do I want..." Kristin scanned the menu and hummed. "Salad, eh. I had a club sandwich yesterday. This vegetable thing looks good."
"Do you always think out loud?"
"Hm? Oh! Grilled cheese sandwiches."
"Uh...you're seriously not going to make me order a grilled cheese sandwich from room service, are you?"
Kristin tossed her menu on the bed. "What's wrong with that?"
"Is that on the kids menu?"
"No, it's on the dinner menu."
"And that's it?"
"It comes with a pickle..."
"Okay then...see you in fifteen."
Kristin hung up the phone and hurried to the bathroom. The water was still running in the tub, way too hot. She waited for it to cool and turned the shower on. Twenty minutes later, she was dressed in grey sweats and a white t-shirt, knocking on Idina's door. Her hair was damp from the shower, but pulled into a loose bun.
"You're late!" Idina called out from behind the door.
"Well, I could leave."
"Don't you dare." The door opened and Idina smiled. She was wearing black yoga pants and a green tank top. "Come in."
"Love what you've done to the place." Kristin observed the clothes strewn about the room and the magazines piled on the dresser.
"I suck at housekeeping." Idina laughed, gesturing toward the window. "But, I cleaned the table."
Kristin took a seat in one of the rolling chairs and Idina flopped down across from her, on the bed. She pulled her feet up, indian-style and put her arms behind her to recline slightly.
"Are you going nuts yet?" Idina asked.
"With what, the show?"
Idina nodded. "You've been at it longer than I have. Don't you just want it to fucking start already?"
"We're a long way off."
"I know!" Idina groaned, falling back against the mattress. "I hate anticipation. It drives me crazy."
"Were you the type of child that knew all her Christmas presents before Christmas."
"Of course." Idina giggled, pushing herself up on her elbows to look at Kristin. "I was master of it. Once, my parents left for a whole day and I opened up a cassette player they'd gotten for my sister and I. Plus, a few tapes. We listened to them and I repackaged everything. Never even ripped the wrapping paper."
Kristin's eyes went wide and she gave a shocked laugh. "What'd they do when they found out?"
"They never found out." Idina cocked her head. "Why would I have told them?"
"They never suspected?"
"I told you." Idina grinned. "I'm the master."
"All right." Kristin pulled her knee up to her chest, letting her toes curl over the edge of the chair. "You don't like surprises, tell me something you do like."
"New York." Idina closed her eyes, breathing deeply. "I love New York."
Kristin folded her hands over her knee and rested her chin on her knuckles. "Would you ever live somewhere else?"
"Mmm...no." Idina shook her head.
"I like it there." Kristin smiled. "I like it here too."
"What is it that you like about Hell A?"
"The hills, the beach, the weather."
"The traffic, the smog, the noise." Idina bobbed her head from shoulder to shoulder.
"New York has traffic and smog and noise."
"It's different."
"Yeah." Kristin nodded. "That is true."
"So, you'll stay?"
Kristin laughed, her brows furrowing. "I wasn't thinking about moving...I just don't know if I see the city as my home for the rest of my life."
"I think you should consider it."
"And I think the New York board of tourism should put you on their staff."
"Well if this gig doesn't pan out, I'll go apply." Idina turned to her side and grabbed the remote from where it lay on her pillow. "I forgot, I said I'd let you pick a movie."
"We can wait till the food comes."
"Yeah, but I'm dying to know what you'll pick." Idina flipped on the TV and went into the options screen for the hotel's current list of movies. After scrolling through a series of menus she finally reached the movies. "Here are your choices. I Am Sam."
"That looks good."
"The Panic Room."
"That looks scary."
Idina snickered. "Okay. A Walk to Remember."
"Hmm..."
"Are you into sappy, tragic romances?"
"You've seen it?"
Idina nodded, flipping the remote control in her hand. "Yep."
"Will I cry?"
"I did."
"No, something funny."
"Y Tu Mama Tambien?" Idina scratched her head with the remote. "Something about someone's mother."
"And your mother too."
"You speak Spanish?"
Kristin twisted her hand back and forth. "Muy poco. Ich spreche mehr Deutscher."
"What in the hell does that mean?"
"I speak more German. Very little Spanish."
"Did you take German in high school?"
"Mmm...no, I did an opera there. But, no subtitles, I didn't bring my glasses." Kristin squinted at the TV, shaking her head.
"I'd like to hear about this opera sometime." Idina raised an eyebrow. "Are you fluent?"
"Nein."
"Teach me something."
Kristin smiled. "Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung."
"Guesshvin....did you just call me something dirty?"
Kristin laughed, shaking her head. "It means speed limit."
"That's crazy."
"What are my other choices?"
"Um..." Idina held the remote up, looking for the right button. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
"I want that one."
"Well let's see what else you're passing up." Idina continued to scroll through the movies. "The Birthday Girl. Is that Nicole Kidman?"
"I like Nicole Kidman."
"And The Good Girl. That was a good movie too."
"You watch a lot of movies."
"It's kind of an addiction." Idina laughed and turned the TV off.
"I'm addicted to shoes."
Idina folded her hands under her head and lay back. "Forgive me, but I find that pretty easy to believe."
Kristin stood and walked the few paces toward the bed. Idina tracked her movements out of the corner of her eye. Kristin plucked Idina's pillow from under the bedspread and promptly dropped it over her head. A muffled laugh came from under the pillow and Idina pushed it away, hitting Kristin in the shoulder.
"You admitted it," Idina said, still giggling. "I just agreed with you."
"You could have at least pretended to be shocked." Kristin sat on the edge of the bed, tossing the pillow back to the top of the bed and laid back next to Idina.
"I'm not that good of an actress." Idina turned her head, grinning.
"Yeah you are."
"No I'm not."
"Yeah you are."
"No I'm not."
"Quit being so self-deprecating." Kristin poked Idina in the side, making her yelp. "You're fabulous, that's why you're here."
"I'll admit I can sing my ass off."
Kristin growled. "That pillow is still over here, I can easily suffocate you."
"You wouldn't suffocate a flea."
Kristin snatched the pillow in her hand and quick as lightning, she had the pillow over Idina's head and sat on her hips, pinning her down. "Take it back." Kristin narrowed her eyes, unsuccessfully suppressing a smile.
"Or what?" Idina punched the center of the pillow lightly. Kristin pushed the pillow onto Idina's face and tickled her ribs. Idina shrieked and Kristin picked up the pillow again.
"Tell me how fabulous you are."
"You're insane." Idina yelped again when the pillow was smashed into her face and she giggled madly when Kristin poked her sides. "Stop! Stop!"
"What was that?" Kristin asked, lifting the pillow.
"I swear to god, if you keep tickling me I'm gonna pee in my pants."
"Then I suggest you agree with me."
"All right, all right." Idina giggled. "I'm fabulous. Sensational. The best ever actress ever."
"Now apologize for saying I couldn't suffocate a flea."
"That was wrong of me." Idina deadpanned. "You're truly an expert on the fine art of flea suffocation."
There was a knock at the door and Kristin dropped the pillow back on Idina's head, climbing off her and the bed. "Food." She bounced to the door, with Idina grumbling on the bed.
Kristin opened the door and let the room service man in. Idina signed for the tray and they were left alone with the cart and covered dishes.
"I can't wait to see what a hotel grilled cheese sandwich looks like." Idina uncovered the first platter, but it was the onion rings. She undid the second one and it was Kristin's sandwich, plus pickle. "Very gourmet."
"Jealous?" Kristin picked up her plate and brought it to the table.
"Yeah..." Idina uncovered her salad and brought the silverware over to the table. "Considering I could've probably done the same thing with two slices of bread and cheese and the iron I have in the closet."
"Ah, but you're forgetting about the pickle."
"Silly me."
They ate with minimal discussion. Idina insisted Kristin have some onion rings and Kristin insisted she couldn't. She had four anyways. Plus the pickle. Idina's salad was half-way gone when she dropped her fork on the plate, leaning back in her chair.
"Ugh, I'm full."
Kristin was munching on the onion ring she said she wouldn't eat. "Full?"
"That salad could've fed southeast Asia for a month. It was huge." Idina pushed her chair away from the table and stood, stretching her arms over her head. "I'm putting on the movie."
It took Idina several minutes to order the movie. By that time, Kristin had finished eating and moved their plates from the table back to the tray. She wheeled it back to the door as the opening credits for the movie started. Idina moved to the top of the bed, leaning against the headboard. Kristin crawled over the bed to join her.
"Uh uh uh..." Idina pulled the pillow away from the headboard. "I don't trust you with that."
"I'll behave."
Idina put the pillow back and Kristin settled beside her. The movie was enjoyable and they made random comments about the dialogue, the actors. Kristin could swear she lived in the same building as John Corbett once and Idina had bumped into him once during a Sex and the City shoot.
During the wedding scene, something hit Kristin's arm and she looked down. Idina was slumped beside her, her head dipped and resting against her arm. She was breathing deeply, her arms crossed over her chest, rising and falling with every inhalation and exhalation. The remote was by Kristin's foot and she slid it up with her toes to arms reach, careful not to jostle the bed too much. She turned the volume down and then put the remote on the nightstand.
Kristin craned her neck slightly to look at Idina's sleeping face. Her chin jut forward slightly, but her jaw was slack. Her mouth was relaxed, lips parted slightly and Kristin noticed tiny dots of freckles on her nose and cheeks, besides the more obvious ones on her forehead. Her hair was wavy today and it slipped forward across her cheek. Kristin turned slightly and hooked the fallen tresses around her finger, easing it back over Idina's ear.
Kristin's hand hovered over Idina's head, her palm close to Idina's cheek. Her fingers twitched above the silken strands of hair and let her hand run the length of her hair without making physical contact. She stopped at the ends, just below Idina's shoulder and she twisted a few strands of hair between her fingers, letting them fall against her shoulder after a moment. She traced the arch of Idina's eyebrow with her index finger, carefully keeping her distance. Her thumb brushed the shell of Idina's ear and she pulled her hand away, holding her breath.
Idina took a deeper breath, her head sliding against Kristin's arm as she burrowed further into her side. Kristin turned her back flush against the headboard, cushioned by the pillow. Her heart was racing and she swallowed several times, taking deep breaths. She looked down at Idina again, biting her lip.
"You're perfect," Kristin whispered, inaudible to even herself. "I wish you'd know that." She rest her hand briefly on Idina's arm, letting her thumb caress her soft skin, ever so slightly.
Idina stirred, unfolding her arms and wiggling down the bed. Her eyes opened momentarily and then she blinked several times, coming to her senses. She yawned and sighed, rolling her head to the side.
"Did I fall asleep?"
"Just for a little bit." Kristin smiled, straightening her back and looking toward the TV. The menu screen was back up and no sound could be heard.
"I'm so sorry."
"It's all right."
"I practically begged you over here and then I fall asleep, I'm a terrible hostess."
Kristin smiled weakly, shutting her eyes. "It's not a big deal."
"Are you okay?"
"I should go." Kristin rolled her shoulders. "I'll probably fall asleep soon, myself."
"Thanks for hanging out." Idina turned, wrapping her arm over Kristin's waist and squeezing her softly. "Even when I'm rude and boring."
"You're not boring." Kristin's hand once again hovered over Idina's head and then laid it on the back of her skull. "And you're never rude."
"You just don't know me well enough." Idina grinned, turning her face up.
Kristin leaned down and pressed her lips to Idina's forehead. "I still have that pillow."
Idina laughed and pushed on Kristin's hip. "Get outta here."
"Hasta manana." Kristin slid off the bed, shoving her toes into her sandals. "Tomorrow you should come to my room. I'll let you choose the movie."
"Can I hide your pillows?"
"Nope."
"I'll think about it."
"Sleep well."
The End
