Invite 6 year old V over for playdate Sunday afternoon.
Swing by Reliable Market Sunday morning on way home from very early favor. Discover they don't open until 10am on Sundays. (They open at 9am on other days)
Take nap, send spouse and Smiles to Reliable to buy dumpling wrappers and scallions.
When V arrives, send both girls to wash hands. Ensuing conversation with the ladder takes enough time that I can chop up the ham.
Distract girls by asking them to cut scallions with butter knives and beat an egg. Season minced ham with pepper, mustard, and clove.
Send girls to wash hands again. Mince the pile of scallions, and mix the seasoned ham, scallions, and half of the egg.
Set up each girl with small bowl of water, cutting board (leftover from the scallion process). Show them how to paint water around the edge of the dumpling wrapper. Scoop half teaspons of filling into the centers until they get the hang of it.
Sit back and watch two artists make dumplings of every shape and size, but mostly well sealed.
Start frying dumplings when V gets bored, since Smiles is determined to use every last smidge of filling.
Serve with milk and cherry tomatoes as an afternoon snack.
The only thing they need is a dip. Maybe an herb yogurt dip? Maybe sweet and sour? Maybe mustard?
