I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Yesterday morning I got up around 5, 5:30 to turn on the news and see how the weather was. Franklin was under a level 2 snow emergency, which means work is not automatically cancelled. However, on the radio station we were told to listen to for our company's cancellation noticies, it said that the factory was closed. Technically speaking, we are not the factory. However, we are right next door, and we are their clerical support, so it makes sense that if they were told not to come in, then we should also not come in. Right? I called Cathy to confirm, and she said that's what she figured, and she was also not coming in either.

Apparently we were both wrong. You see, apparently only factory workers are valuable enough that upper-upper management excused them from having to deal with those treacherous roads; but the office people, well....screw y'all. So it was an unexcused absence for everyone. Nobody showed up, I do believe. Not that we'd be paid for it anyway...it's just annoying.

So, I don't get paid for yesterday. My doctor's appointment was cancelled, so that has to be rescheduled. Nyte braved the weather around noonish to get some cat food and milk and bread, and the cats were very grateful. I finished (nearly - just need to sew on the felt teeth) my Monster Hat and we watched our rented dvds because we've had them for well over a month now. Perhaps well over two months. Oops. Um. It was a snuggly day and we got a little bit of housework done, but just maintenance stuff. Oh, and I sprayed the washer and dryer with white vinegar/water and wiped them down, and they look fab and I am very proud of me.

This morning, however, is the worst morning I've had in a long while. Firstly, the power went out several times last night, so I kept waking up all paranoid that I would miss the alarm. Which meant that when the alarm did go off, I didn't hear it the first couple of times and snoozed until it was actually a little late for me to be getting in the shower. I would have been early to work if there had been no snow, but...yeah.

So, the car doors were frozen on the inside. I tried hot towels to steam it open, I tried pounding on the ice around the join and throwing my weight against the door to crack apart whatever ice was inside, and took about 30-40 minutes doing that before I went to call Nyte for backup. While going back and forth across the parking lot, I managed to fall forward on my knees twice (combo of slippery ice, and the instability of 6 inches of snow under an inch of ice under another two inches of snow, at least), and hyper-extend my knees backward a couple of times, and twist both ankles mildly in my attempts. So, a lot of pain. That plus the fact that I was supposed to be at work in 10 minutes and I was very close to tears.

Nyte came to my rescue and did....cripes, I don't know what he did, but after about 10 minutes he got it open. (I loosened it up for him. Yeah.) So I started the car and got out my scraper and tried to work through the quarter-inch ice on the windshield, not to mention the 1/2-inch of ice on everything else (I scraped the car coming home from work Tueday, but only the windows, so there was a lot of buildup). Broke more off my scraper. Took a good 20 minutes with Nyte's help trying to get some visibility while the car warmed up.

Discovered that I could not get out. *facepalm* The snow and ice on my back mudflaps built up a lot on my way home Tuesday, and fell off the car when I pulled in (and the plow pushed some ice up against the back wheels of all the cars as well), and froze solid in a charming little column of ice. I was stuck.

Did I mention it was -1 degrees out? Yeah. Was very glad to have my hat.

Nyte broke his scraper trying to topple the stalagmite. I suggested a hammer, and after two or three swings, it splintered apart. I have the broken hammer on my desk as a souvenir. He went and got another one (made of stronger stuff this time), and managed to chip the bastard away little by little.

Unfortunately, my attempts to roll backward killed the traction on my right front tire. Since I have an automatic transmission with front-wheel-drive only (STUPID CAR I HATES IT), I wasn't going anywhere fast. A neighbor came out to help push, and we used some lumber scraps from the bed slats to get some traction, and after another 15-20, I managed to get out of my parking spot.

The end result was, I was half an hour late when I pulled out of the parking lot. I still hadn't eaten and was feeling shaky, so I went to Tim's. It took 15 minutes for some strange reason. Let's just say it's a good thing I stayed late on Monday, because I was an hour and fifteen minutes late for work today. The whole thing was ridiculous, and I sort of felt like I was in a sitcom or a comedy or something. I mostly expected to run over a huge nail and have all four tires go flat at once, or fall again and break my collarbone or somesuch.

Checked my timesheet, and found that Tuesday it didn't record me clocking in. *facepalm* OMG, WHAT. I cannot seem to sigh loud enough to convey my frustration and disappointment. And I just KNOW we won't be permitted to make up time next week to make up for Wednesday, because by next week it'll be counted as overtime.

And now I have to take over PR's stupid little invitations project because she's behind on other "more important stuff" and has no time to get them out today/tomorrow. Fuck.

Today I am not in a good mood. My knees and ankles and shins and hip hurt very much from when I fell. Dr. Hashmi's office just called and rescheduled, and they were so nice and the missing bloodwork actually belonged to someone else, and they totally didn't try to blame me at all and figured it out on their own. I am beginning to really like this office. It's just as well that it's delayed, though; in two weeks I'll be done with the prednisone and have time to adjust to life without it, and we'll be able to see whether or not I need more, etc. I'll also have been taking the DMARD for a full month, and if it suddenly clicks on I'll be able to tell by then. So. It's all good.

Nyte got me a big bar of Hershey's Special Dark when he went grocery shopping. He called it a placeholder for my actual present. Which is fine; I don't really expect a present on V-Day, but a flower or some chocolate is nice. I mostly just wanted to make the heart pillow for him and thought V-Day would be a good deadline, what with the theme and all. For a llama/wool blend, it's not too scratchy.

Also, the news stations were saying that the average V-Day expenses have gone up to $200 this year. And I'm thinking.......WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE (and can I have some of their money)? I just hope they're counting the expense of engagement rings and fancy dinners and multiple dozens of roses into that average, because most of the people I know were lucky to get a box of those chalky little chatty heart candies.

Anyway. Okay. Have a lot of stupid busy work to do, and PR will ride my ass about these invitations until I get some results. Bluh.

weather, work, holiday valentine's day, knees
