*Peaks out from behind a wall* Hi. I'm...I'm back with a chapter. You might need to go back and read the last one just to know what's going one. it's been a while. I had a serious case of writers block and not a ton of time to write but today I opened my chapter and literally deleted half of it indiscriminately then i built from there. I will warn you I tried to keep it short but this chapter eats 2 years.
So this chapter is Boes chapter, I think the title pic and the last pic are the only ones Martie is even in lol Hope you enjoy. Please comment I love hearing what you guys think.
Boe was excited as he called to confirm that the moving truck was coming that afternoon; he was on his way to university! Since graduating Boe had spent his 3 months of summer studying as well as looking into all of the classes he would need to take in order to get a degree in Science and Medicine. He had looked forward to this for so long, the chance to further his education and discover the many wonders of the world.
The only thing that broke up his happy thoughts was his sister. Martie needed only 2 more years of school to complete her degree and she and Fury had agreed that she should go to school for one 2 year block, visiting home every other weekend as well as on breaks. At least that's what they said before the baby was born. Once Martie had Bennie she became an emotional roller coaster, one day determined that completing her education and following her career goals were what was best, the next declaring herself a horrible mother for ever considering leaving her son. Their dads, Fury, and even Rose could do nothing to convince her that she was an amazing mother and going to college and fulfilling her own dreams didn't take away from that. The doctor assured them this was simply a mild case of postpartum depression and once Martie was back on her regular exercise regimen again her hormones would even out. This was all well and good as far as Boe was concerned but he was the one that had to do the 12 hour road trip with her. He was the one their dads had tasked to look after her while they were away. So a diagnosis of “It'll go away eventually” wasn't quite good enough for him.
But in the end Martie got in the van without a fight and slept most of the ride. Boe used the time to appreciate the country side and study the landscape. He played no music, just watched the world listening to his sister snore softly to herself and soon enough they were on campus.
Martie and Boe help each other move in to their rooms before deciding to go their separate ways for the night. They stood in the foyer discussing their plans, Martie told Boe where the local comic book shop was and Boe promised to call her and check in at 11 pm, and then the front door opened. A fairy with green wings and a suitcase flew into the building, Boe had read about the supernatural but had never seen one in real life. His shock though, was nothing compared to Marties.
“What are you doing here?” Boe heard Martie say to the man who turned and smiled at her.
“Well hello there Mama! Long time no see? What has it been? Over a year, yeah?”
Martie just nodded, and then her eyes started to gloss over the way they did when she was about to have a 'moment', which was Boes queue to tell the strange man he needed to speak to his sister in private and lead her to her room before she could start sobbing in the middle of the hall.
“Are you okay Martie?” He asked as he locked the door. She sat on her bed, tears falling freely now and shook her head.
“I'm a horrible mother Boe. I fucked up before I even became a mother.” She wiped her nose on her bed sheet, making Boe cringe “Bennie deserves a better mother than me Boe.”
Boe wasn't sure where this had come from or what to say other than what he always told her, she'd never done anything to be considered a bad mom and little Bennie loved her no matter what; then he suggested she go for a run to get her endorphins pumping. In the meantime Boe headed to the little comic shop.
Comic books were a huge part of Boes life, the characters had been his friend his entire life. Not just comics, novels and video games as well. So Boe went to the shop hoping to find a place where he could read and game without too much interruption.
“Hello, names Franklin, I run this shop. Haven't seen you in here before. New student?” An elderly man in a tee shirt and shorts approached Boe as he looked around the shop. They shook hands and Boe introduced himself. The two talked for a few minutes before the man leaned close to Boe “How old are you Boe?” He whispered.
Boe was caught off guard by the question and its delivery, they'd been having an friendly chat about an upcoming video game release, why was this man suddenly so close and looking at him that way?
“I-uh, I'm almost 19.” Boe stammered, he wasn't used to people being this close to him.
“Well,” The man said putting something into Boes hand “You ever need anything, give me a call. Anything.” The way he stressed that last word made Boe uncomfortable but luckily the man was called to the register and Boe was able to look around the shop a bit more. He didn't look long though, he could feel Franklin watching him and it was getting late anyway, he needed to check on his sister and make sure she wasn't sobbing on the lawn or something.
She hadn't been. Boe found her already asleep, exhausted from her run as he knew she would be so he showered and ate and fell into his own bed. Except it wasn't his bed, it was a strange bed in a strange room, it didn't smell like his room, it didn't have his posters, or his wall color. There weren't a million tiny holes in the wall around his dart board, hell his dart board wasn't even there.
All the excitement of college and education vanished as he lay in that strange bed, and he realized that he missed his fathers. They had always been his only friends and now he was far away from them and he wouldn't be back for 2 years. The idea made him want to cry. It had only been one day but already he missed the sound of his home and the ocean, he hadn't realized how much he relied on it to fall asleep. But fall asleep he did, eventually, the next morning classes started.
Boe didn't like to admit it but classes kicked his small town ass. No matter what he did he grade in class kept dropping. He studied, he payed attention in class, he even continued his own outside research but nothing helped. He honestly believe his professors must hate him.
Weeks had passed since he'd first been but to blow off some steam, and to pick up the latest issue of his favorite graphic novel, Boe set off in the direction of the comic book shop once again. He hoped against hope that Franklin wasn't in today. He opened the door, looking towards to office area and, not paying attention ran right into a girl on her was to the game room.
“Oh sorry! I-uh, wasn't paying attention.” Boe said awkwardly. He didn't really like talking to new people, especially when he'd just bashed heads with them.
The girl, for her part, forgave him and smiled “I recognize you...where from? OH! You're my roommates brother! Boe, right?”
Boe nodded, he thought she'd looked familiar “Yeah, I’ve seen you once or twice in the dorms. How are you getting along with Martie? She's been having a pretty tough time”
The girl nodded “She told me all about it, but she says she's feeling a lot better since she started running everyday again but she's real quiet, keeps to herself.” She looked away, the conversation was getting a bit gossipy so she decided to change the topic and held out her hand “I'm Whitney, b.t.dubs”
“Oh my god you're one of them!” Boe said, dramatically throwing his hands up and rolling his eyes, but he smiled at her to let her know he was just teasing. She swatted him with her hand and laughed.
“Yes. I. Am. And there's nothing you can do about it Mr. Boe.” She poked his chest 'I say b.t.w, and o.m.g. And l.o.l. and you're just gonna have to get used to it.” She looked away, realizing too late what she might be implying. Boe did as well and cleared his throat; was she flirting with him? And if not she was at least being nicer than anyone at home had ever been. This didn't happen. Not to Boe Dean. Girls didn't talk to Boe Dean. And yet she was.
“I was just about to go play Space Invaders on the old arcade machine. It's got a two player mode if you want to join me?” Whitney said with a smile, then led the way to the arcade room and put her money in the machine “First game is my treat then loser pays m'kay?”
They played for hours.
“I. Will. Destroy you Boe!” Whitney growled through clenched teeth but the boy just laughed at her anger.
“Whit you couldn't destroy an Earth worm, already half dried in the Sun. You are just gonna have to admit I'm the be-”
“I WANT YOU DEAD!”
“Bring it on then.”
“OHMYGOD!”
“What?” Whitney jumped, and looked up, wondering what had happened.
“Oh my god I can't believe you let me distract you and win the game.” Boe said as he shot a laser at Whitneys space ship, destroying it. The girl stared at the screen in totally shock before raising her eyes to meet Boe and mouthing “I will destroy you”, which earned her a laugh. Before parting ways Boe made sure to give her his number, which made him nervous and stuttery and sweating but he wasn't sure why; Whitney was a friend. He'd just spent hours talking to her, talking to her was so easy they never seemed to run out of things to talk about, but he'd never given someone, let alone a girl, his number before. To his relief she took the paper from him and put it in her pocket promising to call but making him promise to stop by to visit his sister more often.
Boe left feeling like he'd never felt before; he felt... wanted. Was that the right word? He wasn't sure. He'd never had a real friend before and he sure as Hell had never spent any time with a girl that wasn't related to him. This was all so new; did she like him? Would she call? The questions plagued him all the way home. To his amazement Whitney did call. That night. And every night after that. Before they went to bed one of them would call the other and they talked; they talked about their families, their classes, science, comics, games, books, everything. Sometimes they would read to one another from their favorite novels, or make up stories to amuse the other. It wasn't long at all before Boe forgot about being homesick; he no longer missed the smells and sounds of home at night, just looked forward to the whispered conversations and laughs that went on until he'd eventually hear her breathing slow and he knew she'd fallen asleep.
Boe had never had a friend before, let alone a girlfriend. But then again Whitney never said anything about being his girlfriend anyway. She seemed perfectly content to spend ever second with Boe, playing video games and reading comic, or barging full of excitement into his room in little more then her panties about passing some test or another. She didn't seem to realize how she took his breath away, or how the shape of her lips could drive him mad. She called him 'friend' and he accepted that because he'd never had that but he didn't think it fair after she fell asleep each night leaving him alone with his thoughts. The months seemed to crawl.
“Whit?” Boe was nervous “Happy Birthday”
“Oh, thanks Boe. I didn't think you'd remember.” Her head was lowered and she wasn't smiling like she usualy did.
“What's wrong?”
“My mom didn't call. But it's not that important, it's only my 19th. She'll be excited when it's 21. Then we can dri-” She cut herself off and Boe could see she was holding back tears. All at once he felt angry, he'd never seen Whitney cry before, even when she talked about her family, she usually mentioned abuse and abandonment with a such disregard it made him uncomfortable. She never cried. She laughed. But she wasn't laughing now.
“I have something for you!” It was all Boe could think to say. “I thought you'd like them. They're, um, they're-”
“They're forget-me-nots...you-you remembered they're my favorites.” A smile began to emerge but her eyes still shone with tears. She put the blooms to her nose and smiled wide. “I love them. Thank you.” Then she turned and walked away.
Boe didn't see her again for about a week. It was finals weeks, that wasn't unusual. This was his last week at school. If he passed these finals Boe would have an Associates degree in Biology and be well on his way to getting his Masters in medicine. Two years flew by but Boe was excited to see his family again, to see how much his nephew had grown (pictures never do justice), and to finally sleep in his own bed again. At the same time Boe didn't know when he was coming back to school and Whitney was staying on campus.
Boe passed all of his exams and it was time to leave. Whitney hadn’t shown her face yet so he took a chance and knocked on her door.
“Whit...I'm leaving today and I just wanted to say 'Goodbye'. I don't know when either of us will have the money to visit or anything so...” He wanted to say something more. He wanted to tell her he loved her and she was everything he ever thought was perfect, he wanted to tell her that she took his breath away and that he thought her eyes were the most beautiful color he'd ever seen. There were so many things swimming through his head and she wasn't saying anything either. She looked a confused mix of sad and expectant.
So he kissed her.
And she kissed back. She tasted sweet like bubble gum toothpaste, and her lips were just as soft as he'd imagined. Boe wrapped her tight in his arms as they kissed, and he felt her relax in his embrace. It only made him hold her tighter.
“Boe.”
“Hmm?”
“There's an empty room upstairs...” Boe froze, sure in his wildest dreams but he wasn't sure if he was ready to go that far with Whitney just yet. He'd never...well this was the first time he'd been kissed. He didn't want to admit it but what if he wasn't very good.
“Uh..Whit...I never...” He stammered, everything in his body wanted to sweep her upstairs and act out every one of his nighttime fantasies but he hesitated. Then he saw Whitneys shy smile as she looked towards the floor.
“Me either...”
That did it. Hand in hand they almost ran to the empty bedroom.
They spent hours learning each other, laughing when they bumped heads, or when they made a weird noise. It was the most fun either of them had ever had and nothing they expected their first time to be. When they finally lay smiling at each other Boe realized that it was well past time for him and Martie to be packed and on the road.
“I don't want you to go.” Whitney said, as if reading his thoughts.
“I know. But I have a job lined up, i'll pay for you to fly to the Plains during Summer break.”
She laughed “Boe, it's Christmas...That's so far away. But you need to get ready and go. Martie's probably looking for you.”
Boe nodded, he wanted to stay here, warm in bed with his first love. He wanted to stay and run his fingers through her hair, kiss her soft sweet tasting mouth, and just hold her forever. But she was right. He had to leave and he wasn't coming back for two years at least. By then she'd have moved on, gotten her degree, found a real man to take all her worries away. She'd forget about Boe well before he did her.
She kissed him goodbye as he made his way to the car. He'd missed Marties graduation ceremony and she was angry. He didn't care, he had a lot on his mind. It was simultaneously the best and worst day of his life and he wasn't sure how to handle that. So he just leaned his head on the window and tried to remember every freckle on Whitneys body. Martie didn't play any music and eventually Boe slept.
