Jongdae likes everything about Minseok.

He likes the way he bursts into loud giggles and punches Jongdae’s shoulder playfully whenever he cracks a joke, especially if it’s a lame one. He likes the way Minseok smiles, his eyes turning into small crescents when he spots the younger from afar, when they’re waving at each other until their arms hurt.

He also likes it when his best friend lets out a gasp in surprise, getting flustered and startled because of one of Jongdae’s pranks. Usually Minseok’s cheeks puff up, his face flushing a brilliant red from embarrassment. Jongdae especially likes it in the end, when Minseok forgives him and hugs him instead.

His hugs are what Jongdae likes the most. Every time the redhead wraps his arms around Jongdae’s shoulders, the younger has a hard time controlling his racing heart, willing it to not jump out of his chest. Minseok grants him the most hugs during the winter, when they’re both shivering from the cold and in need of warmth. Always, Jongdae hugs his hyung back, as long as the other wants, not letting go until Minseok awkwardly disjoins them, claiming that they’ve been holding on too long. Jongdae doesn’t think it’s nearly as weird as Minseok does, but it’s okay.

As long as the smaller continues to wrap his arms around Jongdae and hold him tight, he’d be satisfied at the end of the day.

The kitchen was filled with the sounds of a sizzling pan and a continuous hum of his favorite song as he worked. Jongdae added a small amount of oil into the frying pan, watching how the sticky liquid slowly coated the bottom until it was time to add the sliced vegetables, stirring them with a wooden spoon until they were bright and crisp.

Cooking wasn’t an activity he was really fond of. Despite his own distaste for the culinary arts, he’d had no other choice since he’d set out to live on his own. There was no else to prepare meals for him in his solitary existence. Sure, he could order takeout, but Jongdae would rather spare his body, and his wallet, that burden.

The dark-haired male continued to hum the song’s tune until he felt a pair of arms slip around his waist, causing him to drop the spoon from his hand in surprise. He flinched and froze for a moment, but recovered quickly, only to feel his body seize up once more at the sound of Minseok’s voice.

“Good evening~”

“M-Minseok? Gosh, you need to stop scaring me like this.”

The orange-haired male chuckled in amusement and tugged at the other’s loose t-shirt, gesturing him to turn around in his arms. The younger quickly did as he was told, greeted by the smile plastered on Minseok’s lips.

“It’s my payback for all the pranks you’ve pulled on me. Besides, you know that I always greet you like this, ever since you gave me your spare key.”

Jongdae narrowed his eyes a little at Minseok and flickered his forehead in a playful manner. “Well, I have to kindly remind you that I gave you my keys just in case I lost mine, not for you to enter my apartment whenever you want.”

“You already know that I won’t ever listen to you, right?” He grinned, wiggling his eyebrows in a teasing manner.

The taller of the two heaved a soft sigh in defeat, but smiled nevertheless and hugged his best friend, resting his chin on the top of his head, mumbling in the other’s hair. “Good evening to you too, Min.”

A comfortable silence settled between them while they continued to hold each other. Jongdae had closed his eyes and tried to enjoy this moment as much as possible, something he usually did whenever the elder pulled him in his warm embrace.

“Jongdae…?”

“Mm?”

“Um, your food is burning.” Minseok pointed out.

Jongdae’s eyes flew open at once and he instinctively pulled away, turning around to face the stove. “My dinner!”

He gasped upon seeing his burnt vegetables on the pan and quickly turned off the heat, gulping when the flames continued to spread.

“Quick! Put the lid on!”

“I will! I will!” Jongdae panicked in fear and clapped the lid on the cooking pan. Luckily, the heat had subsided and he’d slowly calmed down, until it dawned on him that he’d just lost his dinner for that evening.

“What am I supposed to eat now?!” He wailed and ran a hand over his face, groaning in frustration at the thought of cooking again.

“That, my friend,” Minseok began, snaking an arm around the younger’s shoulder. “Is a sign.”

“A sign?”

The raven-haired male eyed the other in confusion with a raised eyebrow.

“Absolutely! This sign means that you and I,” Minseok gestured first to himself then to Jongdae as he spoke. “Are going out for dinner.”

Jongdae raised his hand, attempting to protest the idea of eating an unhealthy meal, but gave in at a stern look from the other, sighing, “Fine… You win. Only because I am not in the mood for cooking again!”

“I thought the reason you gave up was because you desperately wanted to spend some quality time with your best friend.” The redhead pouted, shaking his head disappointedly.

“We spent time together this morning!”

“Are you getting tired of me, Kim Jongdae?”

“Hmm... maybe.”

“How dare you! We’ve been friends for years! You can’t just ditch me like that! You certainly can’t replace me and if you try you’ll be horribly disappointed to never find another buddy like me-”

“I’m kidding.” Jongdae laughed gently as he stopped the petite male from blabbering any more with a pinch on his cheeks, giggling at the way the other scrunched up his face and swat his
hand away. “Hmph! You and your pranks!”

“You know that I’ll never replace you, Min.”

A shy smile formed at his heart-shaped lips, and he nodded in understanding while he rubbed his upper arm. “I know… I was just making sure, alright?”

“Alright, Alright. Now let’s go out and buy our dinner before I change my mind.”

The two men grinned at each other briefly before Minseok dragged his best friend towards the door, coaxing him to put on his coat and shoes faster. As soon as Jongdae was ready, they both walked out of the small apartment when the sudden coldness licked at their bare skin, the pair trembling underneath their layers.

Winter had already settled in the country. In the air, there was a freezing chill that brought a crispness to the orange leaves with the white frost. Several bare trees, with fairy lights wrapped around the branches, lined the crowded streets, the faint light giving off a comfortable atmosphere. Every breath taken rose in visible puffs as teeth chattered at an icy wind howling against the bundled pair. The shorter of the two shifted closer to the other for warmth, unable to resist the smile tugging at his lips in response at his movements. Jongdae wrapped his almost numb fingers around his small hand and slipped their intertwined hands in his coat pocket to keep them warm. The gesture brought a blush to Minseok’s cheeks, making them pinker than they already were.

“Warm now?” Jongdae asked gently, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.

“A little bit better, thank you.”

In silence, they made their way towards the local Chinese restaurant around the corner of the street. They always bought their food there whenever they decided to spend dinner together, despite any other suggestions Jongdae might propose. The redhead would always refuse the idea of eating somewhere else other than their favorite restaurant.

The younger pushed the doors open, greeted by the smell of food wafting through the air towards the entrance of the local restaurant. His muscles relaxed, easing into comfort as the warmth wrapped around the pair. The place was quite full and almost all the tables were occupied by customers.

“I hope there is still a place for us…” Minseok frowned worriedly.

“Don’t worry, Min. There is always a place for us! We are their loyal customers, remember?”

“Says the one dead set on ‘trying something new’ and going somewhere else.”

“Okay, maybe you’re their only loyal customer.”

“That’s okay. As long as you behave like a loyal friend, I’m happy.” He laughed and punched the other’s shoulder in a playful manner.

Jongdae winced and rubbed the area, shooting his best friend a glare until a friendly-looking man approached them, greeting them enthusiastically upon seeing the two of them. They quickly composed themselves and cleared their throats awkwardly before the foreign man led them to a table at the back of the small restaurant, next to the window. Thanking him, the two friends took their seats and picked up the menu cards. Shortly after they chose what to eat, they ordered their food and waited for it patiently.

With a hand propped under his chin, the taller stared out the window distractedly. It might have looked as though he was watching the pedestrians pass on the street, but his eyes were fixed on the reflection of the boy across from him.

“What are you looking at, Dae?”

“Oh? Um, I am just waiting for snow to fall.”

“Do you think it’ll snow soon?”

“Yes, especially since it has been freezing for the past few days. I’m pretty sure it’ll snow tonight.”

“How are you so sure?”

“I don’t know… I just have this feeling that it will.”

“I think you’re right. I really hope it’ll snow tonight…”

“Why is that?” The younger cocked an eyebrow, tilting his head to the side as he eyed his hyung with curiosity.

“Because…” Minseok whispered, looking down at his lap. “I want to see it with my best friend.”

The corners of his lips curled upwards and a faint shade of red dusted his cheeks at the other’s confession. Jongdae opened his mouth respond, being interrupted by the waiter, who’d returned with their orders. They thanked the friendly man, a bright waiter who always had a smile on his lips, before he departed for the kitchen. The two friends picked up their chopsticks and began eating contently while conversing about everything that crossed their minds, laughing every now and then.

After they finished dessert, they decided it was time to take their leave and go back home. The younger pushed the door open for Minseok and exited the restaurant after him. However a cold wind picked up behind them, wrapping around their bodies like a snake. The redhead flinched at the sudden coldness and instantly threw his arms around the other for warmth, trembling heavily.

“C-Cold…” Minseok stuttered, his head buried in the male’s chest.

Jongdae blinked as he found himself being hugged by the elder. He bit onto his bottom lip to suppress himself from smiling goofily and without thinking twice, he looped his arms around the petite male to give him his warmth. “Want to stay over at my apartment tonight?”

“If you don’t mind.”

“Of course not, you know that you’re always welcome. Besides, I don’t want you to freeze to death while you are on your way back home.”

“And I’ll always thank you for that.”

“It’s my job as a best friend.”

“What job?”

“Taking care of you, silly.”

“Y-Yah, I’m the one supposed to take care of you since I’m older.”

“And yet I always end up taking care of you first.”

Minseok simply flushed, though he couldn’t help himself from smiling at those words. As they were about to pull away from each other, tiny snowflakes fell from heaven to the earth and floated in the air, gracing the ground with their unique beauty.

“It’s snowing!” The redhead exclaimed in surprise, looking up at the night sky and giggled when snow fell on the tip of his red nose, slowly melting away.

“I was right, after all.” Jongdae whispered and brought a hand to Minseok’s face to wipe his nose clean while silently admiring his beautiful facial features.

“You were,” He replied back with a whisper, gazing into the other’s dark brown orbs. “Though… I have the feeling something else will happen tonight.”

“Oh? What is it-”

And the next thing he knew, he felt a pair of soft lips against his. Jongdae had hardly a moment to react before arms reached up and wrapped around his neck. He fluttered his eyes shut and gently kissed the elder back. The cold had long since been replaced with the warmth that had spread throughout his entire body, beginning the moment their chapped lips moved against each other. His heart thumped rapidly in his chest and the butterflies fluttered his stomach.

When they broke apart for air, he rested his forehead against the other’s and their blushes deepened as soon as their eyes met. The pair panted softly, their visible breath mingling together and floating in the air.

“I don’t feel c-cold anymore.” Minseok stuttered, his fingers curling in the fabric of the male’s coat.

“Neither do I.” He sighed in contentment and leaned downwards, pressing a lingering kiss to the petite’s forehead. The couple continued to stay in each other’s arms, sinking in their holds and sharing sweet confessions under the falling snow. By the time it began growing colder, Jongdae had grabbed Minseok’s hand and led him towards his apartment in silence. The redhead tightened his grip on the younger’s hand and squeezed it affectionately. Meanwhile, Jongdae tried to control his racing heart from bursting out of his ribcage, nearly bursting at the memory of his best friend’s lips on his own. It was something he could only dream of, something he could hardly believe had happened; that Minseok would initiate the kiss.

The walk to the apartment didn’t last long since the restaurant was located a few streets away. When they arrived, Jongdae took his house keys from his coat pocket and unlocked the door before entering and slipping off his shoes, then taking off his coat, the other doing the same. They made their way towards the living room and Jongdae announced he was going to prepare something warm for them to drink. The elder nodded in understanding and decided to make himself comfortable in the male’s bedroom while waiting for him.

Jongdae watched his best friend disappear to his bedroom and he turned to enter the kitchen. He smiled dreamily when he recalled how soft Minseok’s lips were against his, wanting to feel them again. With a soft sigh, he opened the cabinets above him to take out two mugs and set them on top of the kitchen counter. The younger began making hot chocolate with extra foam, which he knew to be Minseok’s favorite drink during this time of the year, especially when he was the one who prepared them.

After a few minutes, he finished making the sweet liquid and poured it in each mug before placing it on a tray. Carefully, he lifted the tray from the counter and carried it towards his bedroom with silent steps. With his foot, he opened the door and entered the room as he met with the sight of his best friend curled under the blankets on his side of the bed, facing the window.

The shorter of the two looked up the moment he noticed the latter’s presence in the room. He sat up on the bed and flashed him a bright smile, patting the empty spot next to him. Jongdae smiled back in return and placed the tray on the nightstand so that he could climb into bed. Once he settled himself next to Minseok, he watched the petite figure nestle between his legs.

“You’re finally back.” The orange-haired male whispered, nuzzling in the crook of the other’s neck.

“Did you miss me?”

“Of course I did.”

“I thought you were already asleep, though.”

“How could I? I just kissed my boyfriend.” Minseok laughed and wrapped his arms around his neck, pulling Jongdae in his warm embrace.

“Boyfriend, huh?” He grinned when the smaller hugged him, wiggling his eyebrows. “Can I have another kiss?”

“After I drank my hot cocoa.”

“But-” And the same lips from earlier interrupted him again.

❄︎

Jongdae loves everything about Minseok.

The way he bursts into loud giggles whenever they stare at each other lovingly for too long, since Jongdae likes to constantly comment on how pretty his eyelashes are; or when he purses his soft lips into a small pout each time he wants kisses from the younger, trying to avoid asking for what he wants.

He also loves it when his boyfriend grabs his hand and intertwines their fingers together. Usually Jongdae will look down at them and point out how perfect they fit into each other, like two missing pieces of a puzzle.

His hugs are what Jongdae loves the most. Whenever the redhead spots him from afar, he runs towards him with his arms extended out to throw them around the other. He would always hug his lover back and stay in his arms until it’s time to let go, usually because people are staring.

But Jongdae thinks it’s okay. As long as the smaller continues to give him hugs, he’ll be happy because now, he’s finally lucky enough to be able to hold Minseok in his arms whenever he pleases.

Author's note: i fixed some things here and there. i hope it was fluffy enough!
