Me too! When they first mentioned dark, Stooges-esque punk record, I was excited.
I never took them to be a band that followed trends - but synth fucking pop? Fuck that shit.

maybe you should wait and see how trend following it is before you pass any judgement.

pop is a very broad term, it doesn't always mean what you think it will.
