Friday I was able to participate in Discovery Day because of my half day at work. I didn't think I would place at all just for the fact that I barely had any sleep the night before and I didn't practice my presentation as much as I would have liked.
The first time I presented my research at the nationals for AIChE, I had practiced a few nights before leaving for Cincinnati. Then imagine my surprise when I placed third in my section, which was Biomedical.
Well I set my poster up around 11 am yesterday-ready to start for the afternoon. Not many people noticed us way in the back. But we did have some people who were really interested in the research, and walked by every ones' poster to talk to them.
But I gave great presentations when the judges came by and for the students that came by a gave a slightly more informal presentations. I talked to one of the judges for about 30-40 minutes just explaining every detail. It was easier when both judges you get are eager about the students research experiences. ^_^ I did get a great compliment from one of the cheme students who stopped by. I missed seeing her due to my co-op, but she said that I was enthusiastic every time I gave my presentation. Well that certainly made my day.
Anyways by 3:00 pm the judging was finished and we had a few minutes before the awards ceremony started. I took time to get a drink because my throat was so dry from talking so long. When I came back it was about 3:15 and I was going to see all the other poster I didn't get to see. Well I wouldn't happen because as soon as I started looking, Dr. Sorensen walked up to me and asked if I had a poster, so I pointed it out. We walked to mine and he asked if I knew who he was and of course my answer was: Not a clue. He smiled and introduced himself. Boy I was embarrassed, I didn't recognize him. ^_^ Anyways I gave him a quick presentation on my research before the awards ceremony started.
At 3:30 the actual ceremony started. Biomedical was the first poster section to be announced. Apparently the judges thought I did great with the delivery of my presentation because I won second place. I walked up to accept my award and have my picture taken with Dr. Sorensen. He was nice and talked to everyone who won. When I was there he told everyone about my presentation I gave him and how I didn't know who he was. But it was all in good fun and laughter was heard from the audience. I, however was a tad embarrassed even though I found the whole incident funny. A few of my friends from engineering also placed. My good buddy Kelvin also placed second and I said YAY really loud. ^_^ Everyone in the few rows grinned at my ever present enthusiasm.
Even with the lack of sleep, I felt really good about myself. I finally feel like I can retire that poster and summer research experience. If I will present research again it will be for something new I have worked on. ^_^
