So there I was trying to update this often. Oops. Try again.
Anyway, life is pretty good here. Things are amazingly wonderful at the Journal. Seriously. And yes, I know that's hard to believe. I guess the unfortunate side of that is Tashia ended up quitting about a month ago. She was close to getting fired due to an email John found on her computer, which I feel her being fired would have been fair under the circumstances, but I won't go into that. I guess our friendship had been going downhill for awhile. Several months ago I decided I didn't want to be miserable at work anymore, so I changed my attitude. And with my changed attitude, I saw friendships reform that had been lost and in turn the entire mood in the office changed and everyone started getting along again, except Tashia who was COMPLETELY incapable of having a good attitude and really looked down on me for changing mine and getting along with everyone again. The turning point came when Kari and I went to see the new Saw movie just after it hit theaters. It was a great afternoon...we got Starbucks and pedicures, went to Sephora then to the movie. Nothing crazy. We saw the last Saw movie together as well, so why not continue the traditionm. Well, Tashia did not like that I was befriending Kari again and became jealous, saying how dare I not take her side on John's possible firing of her, not defend her to him, etc. etc. I had NOTHING to do with the situation between her and John, nor was I going to get involved. John is a great boss when things are good, generous to a fault. (Obviously, when things are bad, they are BAD...but they're good now, and seem to be staying that way for now.)
I guess the friendship is over. I tried to fix things. Apologized for my role in everything, for anything I did wrong. She tried to excuse what she said. I took her to dinner just after she quit and thought we could just forget the mess and move on. I realized when I got home I just couldn't. She had changed. She is negative, self-centered and unable to handle me being happy at work and having other friends. I feel bad. I have never ended a friendship before, nor felt I needed to. Sure, there are rough patches...I'm sure I've had one with everyone reading this, but they pass.
Moving on from that situation, which is still ongoing a month later, everything else is good. Jeff has started doing video for the Journal on the side. We covered a factory fire here (100,000 sq. ft. facility) last week. Tomorrow we're doing a human interest/feature story.
I received two awards from the Hoosier State Press Association, which almost every newspaper in the state of Indiana belongs to, last weekend which was very exciting. I won second place for best story under deadline pressure for my coverage of a murder/suicide in January of this year. I also won a community service award for a debate I coordinated and moderated during the 2008 elections. The second award meant a lot because I worked VERY hard on the event.
I am job hunting so we can move closer to South Bend where Jeff is working, but on the other hand I am a little weary about leaving such a solid job when the economy is still unstable. We are just following God's guidance and if he wants us to relocate, something will open up.
I am loving my new car, courtesy of the deer that ran into my Grand Am the day before my birthday. It is well worth the car payment and I think Jeff agrees.
It's super exciting to be going into my first married Christmas with Jeff. We cut down a real Christmas tree a few weeks ago and our apartment is completely decorated. My parents (and grandma) are coming here to spend Christmas with us and then we will be traveling to Michigan for the weekend of New Years to spend that with his family. I have really great inlaws for which I am SO thankful.
I miss so many things about Michigan and miss being closer to family and friends. I am rather sad I haven't seen Katie in awhile and whenever we do get together it's a whirlwind. My job at the Journal is very far from a 9 to 5 job. I find myself working most weekends and often four nights a week, but it is so worth it. The community here is wonderful and Jeff and I have found ourselves admitting lately we will definitely miss a lot of things about it when and if we move.
Merry Christmas everyone :) I will try to update more often.
