This will be an intermittent, utterly fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants series that I intend to post here about roleplaying games and my reactions thereto over time. Non-geeks should feel free to ignore... ;-)

Brookhurst Hobbies - that takes me back. Sorry to be so late getting into this thread. I've been at family reunions for much of July. I spent much of my teen life living near BH and didn't understand how wonderful it was until I was in my 20s. It seemingly had everything for games. But I had thought it was strictly a model shop -- silly me.
I remember the original box set of D&D and how simple it seemed until you ran into a DM who had real creativity. Suddenly those few dozen pages which most people had memorized vanished and you saw someone else's vision of a different world. The books were just some guidelines for storytelling. It was magic. I was hooked from the time I was 18. I used to play with a group at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoons and evenings. We would play until security kicked us out of the business building. Then we would head to a Spires restaurant and rehash the game (or pick treasure) for another hour. Then home by dawn. I'll never forget those days.
And to think that that 3 volume set would lead to all the myriad games that came afterward. Amazing.
