The Pope's predecessor, previously known as Albino Cardinal Luciani, was the one who should have sat on that throne all these years. It was whispered at the time that he was murdered for his progressive and humanist beliefs, that the Church didn't need another John XXIII after the Arab oil embargo and Watergate and the ever-more-strident nuclear threat.

Since at the time I was young and Catholic and headed for the monastery, it was a great 33 days. After he died, so did my Catholicism.
