Well I know I dont use this as much as I should but here I am with some time.
Today on my favorite radio show, "the Diane Rheem Show" it was the weekly news roundup. I love the round up and I cant ever miss a minute of it, hence I got a phone with fm radio in it so I can listen out of the truck and never miss a beat and people have no idea until I clue them in.
Anyway they were discussing the deteriorating situation in the world. All over the world. Pakistan and afghanistan caught my attention today. I see that the world is heading to hell in a handbasket much faster than previously discussed if you really look at it and I think we have contributed an awful lot to this. No not by going and killing people, not by promoting regimes that are oppressive, and not by funding proxy wars. We are messing things up with information.
Because we now run on a 24 hour news cycle, we have a communication network in place that the whole world uses for news, round the clock and really loudly at that. The reason this matters is that bad guys learn what works a lot faster than they used to, usually before we figure out how to stop those things that work. In iraq we (a huge super power with lots of technology) came in to whip around the poor little arabs. In short order they have figured out how to stymie us quite effectivly. See the current situation if you dont believe me dick cheney. Anyway in Afganistan the enemy has learned a great deal from this. They have learned that suicide bombing is a great tactic, gains support in the neighborhoods and is cheap and unstopable. They have learned IEDs work. THey have learned to retreat at the slightest show of force and wait for the right time. In short the bad guys have figured out exactly how to beat us and for some reason we cant get around them. Why we cant adapt is a nother entry for another time but it is some leadership and some other stuff lets leave it at that for now.
Anyway, due to the rapid spread they have learned all over the world how to cause sucha nuisance that the big guys will eventually back down. What we have done is topple a bad dude that was helping us to maintain stability, open up the biggest terror training camp in the world, full of targets and ammo and money, and given a whole new generationa reason to fight and die. If we dont fix this shit and demonstrate that though you may succeed in stopping us for a while you will ultimately fail.
How do we do this you ask? Surge, yes I like the surge but only if you make it bigger, with more freedom in the rules of engagement. Dust off those big ole B 52s and show the enemy that if they want to die, kill their own civilians, destroy their country, we can help until there are none left. This war will never end if we continue to fight in a manner palatable to the tv viewing public. My dad likes to say that in the modern age it is impossible for a democracy to win a war. I agree. Remove the constant flow of information and all of a sudden the military will win the war. We pigeonholed ourselves with this information blitz and now the whole world will pay the price for generations unless someone has the political guts to tell the rest of the world to F
