So tired

I went to see a play last night. It's called The Love of the Nightengale.

I enjoyed the show quite a lot but though I was tired at around 10, it kept my head buzzing until much later at night. I think it was probably around 1:30am before I was finally able to sleep and that's after the glass of wine I had when I got home around 10:30ish.

The story is sort of typical for greek tragedy.

The short synopsis is: Procne is "won" by a king from a country to the north (Tereus) and marries him and moves there with him. She is lonely there because she is a stranger in the land and asks him to go get her sister Philomel to come and visit her. He does and on the way back he falls in love with Philomel but she doesn't have a thing for him so he rapes her and she threatens to tell everyone what a rat bastard he is so he cuts out her tongue. She is voiceless and can't speak for herself and nobody would speak for her even though they saw it coming a mile off. Everyone turned a blind eye.

So Tereus keeps up his forceful "relationship" with Philomel while also going back to his wife. There is a day of revelry in the streets and Procne runs into her sister in the street. Philomel is being cared for by a servant who came with her from home. She has spent much time carefully crafting dolls and she is able to communicate with her sister what happened to her. They are reunited and together take revenge on Tereus. The gods are angered by the whole deal and turn Procne into a swallow, Philomel into a Nightingale and Tereus into a hawk and he is condemned to persue them forever.

I was reading about the story today and interestingly enough as written by Ovid, Procne kills her and Tereus' son and feeds him to Tereus and then throws the head of their son at him. How's that for a marriage killer. :P In one version Procne is turned into the Nightingale to sing mourning for the son she killed and he is ressurected as a goldfinch.

Anyway, the message is pretty powerful and I enjoyed the production. Unfortunately the first half was a little bit rough but the second half was excellent. I would recommend it. :)

Before the play was some excellent Thai. I'm a total sucker for the Pad Thai so I got some with glass noodles and it was quite tasty. Just the right level of spicy for enjoying without hurting. :) Enough to give me the sniffles but not enough to make me outright cry. Happily I have a bit leftover for tonight. :) Sadly, it's not very much.

I need to go grocery shopping tonight.
