Home sweet home

We had a lovely little multicultural potluck last Friday at work. It was great. I volunteered to bring some Lumpia, but somehow I was also volunteered to set up a small Filipino booth. Fantastic. Had to scramble around my still-unpacked room for some Filipino items, bags, pictures, toys, coins, anything!! I managed to find my two little Filipino dolls, some beaded jewelry, a paperweight Grandma got me that has Filipino coins super-glued on it and then this wooden, Filipino box that nobody wants and keeps rotating amongst us sisters and always, somehow managed to end up with me (What the hell is it doing in my boxes?!)... that was it. Not enough to make a booth out of. So I had to borrow the water buffalo figurine I got Mike from Philippines, and I must say, that dork seemed so reluctant to part from it... yeah, don't know why. It's got a scary, evil look on its face and it's made of some marble-like coral. Very nice. Did I mention we named it D'Jango? ANYWAYS, was planning to go to my parents and bring some Filipino paintings I bought from over there and then the Sungka game, plus more figurines, the nice wooden ones. But alas, me and my sister were too lazy to drive over there, so I had to settle with I have. So for my last-ditch effort, I went to Wal-Mart and bought sea-shells. Yes, I know it's cheating, but hey, it says on the bottom "Made in the Philippines." So there you go.
To enhance my meager, little booth, I decided why not print out some pretty pictures of Philippines? I googled for images and I don't know what the hell I typed under search, but the images that popped up... well let's just say they weren't exactly good representations of Philippines. Let's see, my choices were shots of squatters living in poverty, very sick people, prostitutes of Angeles City and then some exploding volcanoes. Hmmm... I could have gone for realism with these, I guess.
In the end, I settled for some nice pictures of the Mayon Volcano (typical), the Rice Terraces, the Chocolate Hills and the Taal Volcano. The booth went well. The Lumpias disappeared quickly. We all enjoyed ourselves. Now I want to go back to the Philppines.
