bitjam

I've been asked to 'help spread the word' about BitJam, the Bitfellas radio.

And to that end, here's an announcement, cut and pasted from the news announcement thingage:

BitJam, the new scene radio at http://www.bitfellas.org , has gained some weight. In the last 24 hours a total of 666 tunes were added to the playlist, of which around 500 are Amstrad CPC tunes (Big thanks to Grim!). This brings the total number of tunes to 9184 (by 899 authors). So tune in to either: 'http://hangar18.campus.ltu.se:8086/bitjam.ogg.m3u' (ogg/vorbis) or http://hangar18.campus.ltu.se:8086/bitjam.mp3.m3u (Mp3) and enjoy the new (and old!) songs in our playlist. Also feel free to help us fill our database with the nationality and other information about the authors.

Now having said that or whatever, I should say some things about me, as a spokesperson, talking about a scene radio.

As many of you know, I was a BIG proponent of Nectarine, the demoscene radio that Yes has run since March 1, 2000. I discovered it on July 24, 2000; I started listening 24/7 on July 24, 2000. I was a Nectarine Admin, I hosted the FTP for uploaded tunes for a bit when scene.org had some issues (or something, I forget why) and promoted it a LOT.

Some of the admins had a disagreement or two about 3 years ago, I guess. I've lost track of how long ago it was, I just know that some promises were made that didn't happen - meetings that were to happen that didn't - and thus some issues weren't resolved to my satisfaction. And then there was the part where every time I would start to discuss something with a certain other fellow on the admin team, I'd hit the freaking roof in anger.

Then in December 2005 it was announced that all the admins agreed that we'd start censoring.

Ok, that's paraphrased, but it is essentially how it was presented and the result.

If you know me at all, you know I will NOT f*n stand for censoring. (Yes I realized I just censored myself. Shut up, that's not what I'm talking about.) There was no way IN HELL I'd vote for Al "Tipper's enabler" Gore and his wife Tipper, the Antichrist. So of course I voted for Bush because it would keep them from getting into the white house and ruining the country via their censoring tactics. (Also, anyone who misunderstands the (previous to patriot act) Constitution as much as Tipper (and Janet Reno, and so on) do - they need to be kept the hell OUT of government.

Now, come to find out that we've got the same sort of thing from a certain Lynne person, near the white house now. AAUGH. And then the mess that's ensued since 9/11, a ton of it has been with censoring intent - you know, criticize the government, go on a list; that's a form of censorship as well. Can't publish that stuff, or talk to that person, they're on a list.

Communist Russia had that, there is no way I'll stand for that in the government of my country, and there is no way in HELL I'll put up with it in a radio that I'm involved with.

Well I blew my top again at that, and pretty much resigned after stating my case because when you have a non-negotiable status such as "I WILL NOT ALLOW CENSORING, NO WAY, NO HOW" then you pretty much can't really discuss things further. And... that lasted until one day when it just died.

The Ojuice servers that it ran on went kaput. It ran on Windows IIS, so we were all rather shocked really that it lasted very long. And the database was private and the files were unable to be moved from France and we'd said for a LONG time that it should be backed up somewhere else JUST IN CASE IT DIED and boom, it died, and we didn't hear anything.

So we fans and listeners and admins went for some time without hearing about it, and then one day on pouet - not direct, that would be ... you know, an acknowledgement that the admins other than the 'main admin' (left in Yes' stand) were worth something - well that it would come back sometime.

Various discussions, various statements, various attempts to begin radio projects (TEHO is still in development, I still have plans for it, I need it for home) and so on - well, Spectral had his stream, and it worked, and... so I listened to that.

And eventually it became BitJam.

and then Nectarine came back, and I was left in the position that I was no longer supporting Nectarine, but I did not want to come out and announce "OMG NECTARINE SUXXOR NOW THEY ALL WORSE THAN TIMBALAND" or other lameness. Yes did a good job and it was a GOOD community, and that community does not need little ego problems from admins blowing things out of proportion.

So, then, I saw that Yes was going to go to Breakpoint, and I was a bit concerned; what if he wanted to discuss it, how would I handle that - I had, actually, said something at one point (in the FAG megademo from Kindergarden last year - yes, folks, the FAG megademo. Finnish Amiga Group. FAG. Get over it, we haven't.) But in order to read that you pretty much have to put up with a BUNCH of gay pr0n and a really .. not great demo. (fun to make at the party place. And a really well drawn heart. Don't watch the demo. Unless you want to.)

Anyway, so I was a bit concerned that I'd kinda blow up when we met, and that I wasn't sure what to say to him and all...

So at Breakpoint, while talking to Axel, there was a fellow there with him, and he was fairly quiet, and so I asked if it was Yes, and he sort of sighed and said yes.

So I hugged him and said good to see you, and he smiled, and we left it at that.

When he was leaving, he came up to me and said it was good to meet me, and he hoped we'd continue to see each other about.

So, for me, the issue with Nectarine is all solved.

(Yes, that is ACTUALLY ALL THAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN.)

So in many ways, I'm a bit... not wanting to put this announcement up. Nectarine is a great place, a really good community for folks who enjoy demoscene music (that's not a genre, it's a bunch of genres, 'demoscene music' is music made by demosceners.)

But so is Bitfellas, though they are different. They have different aims, goals, and share a lot of the same user base.

Listen to both, folks, listen to both. Both have good music. Both have music that will make you question yourself. And Nectarine is the only one of the two with Altemark's "Property is Theft" which is one of the best songs ever made, despite the fact that people HATE IT.

And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

(NO, I didn't cut tag, because it ALL needs to be seen by folks who read the 'announcement.')
