So Fall break is half over. I'll do a run-over of what happened.
-Left Ohio Friday before 5. We stopped over several times. Twice, we stopped for considerable breaks, one of which was at the Dutch Pantry that was not Dutch at all except that the waitress wrote something in Dutch on our checks. Although it was such a long trip (if we didn't stop so often, we would have made it in about 8 hours opposed to at least 9 hours), Patience and I talked of cool things, while I glanced at Daniel dozing off in the backseat in my rearview mirror. We finally got to my house at 2 AM and got to bed at 3.
-I woke up at 6 and got ready. My mother drove us to Willowbrook to catch the 730 bus to Port Authority.
-I got to Columbia at about 830, an hour early. The building was still closed, so Sara told me to go to sleep on the concrete bench.
-The first day of the conference went from 930 AM to 645 PM. Non-stop training on working for universal AIDS treatment access by 2010. Pretty hardcore stuff. And very tiring, in addition to getting only three hours of sleep after doing the whole drive from OH.
-Confusion at Columbia. The person I was assigned to stay with didn't have a phone number, so I tried calling friends to see if I could stay with them. I ended up leaving my bags at this one girl's room, where some of the SGAC'ers were staying.
-Went exploring to Greenwich Village with some people from the Conference. I still don't know all their names, but there were four of us in total. The first shop we went into was of my choosing, which of course, was a porn shop.
-Explored some more. They really wanted to find a coffee place. We failed. I was bored- not many fun places to go when you're not 21. So I called Brendan and Andrew who were at NYU. Then Yuling called. He was at Times Square, having missed a bus by two hours to Providence.
-Ditched the other girls and took the 2 to Times Square. After a little waiting, Yuling finally found me across from Chevys. From there, we went down to 14th and 3rd to NYU.
-Met up with Brendan and Andrew in Brendan's friend John's room. Also there was a first-year Obie, who had weird eyes, that were kind of crystal-ly, not in a cool way. At some point, all of the NYU kids left, and the room was full just of Obies. It was like just being in the South quad's room back at Oberlin.
-Yuling and I went down to the deli to get beer. He got himself and me each a 40, and two packs of Rolling Rock.
-Andrew and Brendan left to meet up with Brendan's friends from Taiwan, whom he hasn't seen in many years. Yuling left the building to make a call, and I was left alone with NYU kids and the weird first-year Obie who was drunk-flirting with this other NYU dude. They looked like cousins to me (similar skin, red hair, and facial structures), so I got a little creeped out.
-Some probs with the security guard (what's up with this signing guests in?!?!) Then Yuling and I just left to find Andrew and Brendan at this pizza place. After that, we finally went to Andrew's house in Staten Island.
-The next day, I slept in and missed the last day of the Conference. I was too tired to bother. Andrew's dad took me and Yuling to the ferry, and we left each other at 42nd.
-I took the 2 up to 116th, vaguely remembering what Daniel told me about the 1 and 2. So I ended up having to go through Harlem to Columbia. I was hiding the fact that I was freaking out the whole time.
-I got my stuff and showered, and then went back down to Andrew's.
-The next day, we all went to Shibo's barbeque. Niels and his brother Kurt were already there. Daniel joined us a little later. We had a LOT of meat, played pool and ping pong, watched "Heroes", and played a lot of poker. Daniel won 9 dollars, and a piece of chocolate, that Shibo ate.
-Finally, after spending the night, Daniel and I headed home. It took me fours, and Daniel at least 2. All that commuting just makes you mad tired. It's crazy that I'm only an hour from Manhattan, while Andrew and Shibo take two hours to get there.
And, then the details to come in the next entry...
