[Job filler] The cupboard is still bare

Aug 17, 2006 02:20

Hello. My name's Kevin, currently unemployed, and I wasn't planning to post again until I was employed. Sadly, I'm finding out the ESL industry is a tough nut to crack. Even going straight to their offices to ask for work, a very successful way of job hunting according to experts, isn't working.

Then there's the encouraging yet discouraging news from today's local newspaper:
"There's employment everywhere. The unemployment rate is down so significantly that virtually anyone who wishes to work and is able to work can work." - The Coquitlam Now, under the headline: "Businesses desparate for workers: One even offering staff a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas." o_O
DESPARATE. I could almost hear this article laughing at me, printed for the sole purpose of popping a vein in the one Vancouverite not working. If there really is a worker shortage in this city, why can't I find work?? What's going on here?? Or more precisely: WAZZUPWITDAT?!! ARG! Maybe I need to start making more contacts instead and try to get in through an insider . . still, I really hate meeting people with an ulterior motive in mind.

Still, I remain hopeful. Today, I dropped by an ESL school completely run by Japanese, and I felt more relaxed than any other school I've been to so far because it felt really Hirono-ish. I was told that they'd make their decision in a week, and I'm really crossing my fingers that I'll be considered . . then again, the one thing really working against me is that it *is* completely run by Japanese. ^^; When they asked if I could speak Japanese, I responded: "A little bit" . . I couldn't even muster a "sukoshi." >_<

I had a bit more to write, but it's 2 AM and tomorrow's another big job hunting day, so instead, I leave you with this music video gem . .

ORANGE RANGE - Un Rock Star
The first good OR song and video in over a year! FINALLY, they've dropped the love ballad crap and gone back to their rockin', silly roots. I can't believe they still haven't gotten a new drummer though . . is Japan suffering a worker shortage, too? ^^

P.S. Will catch up on comments and LJ tomorrow . .

work, cf
