From imdb:
A new study indicates that with the growing use of product placements, along with promos and public-service announcements, marketing messages now account for 35 percent of every hour in primetime, increasing to 40 percent in reality or unscripted programs. The study by TNS Media Intelligence, reported in MediaPost's online MediaDailyNews, said that the average hour of primetime includes 17 minutes and 31 seconds of commercials and 3 minutes and 22 seconds of product integrations, while unscripted programs include 18 minutes and 6 seconds of commercials plus 7 minutes and 39 seconds of product integrations. In late-night variety shows, the combination of commercials and product placements accounted for 31 minutes and 27 seconds per hour of programming.
To supplement, here's a comparison of some 1-hour shows I've downloaded without commercials . .
Japanese shows
47 minutes - Dragonzakura
47 - Ima Ai
46 - Gokusen
46 - SekaChu
American shows
41 minutes - American Idol
41 - Iron Chef
40 - CSI
36 - Young and the Restless (for my mom ^^;)
I don't know if all soap operas are that length, but if so, it boggles the mind that nearly half of a show can be commercials. o_O And I'm actually shocked that American Idol is longer than I thought it'd be. When I watch it live, it feels like it stops very frequently for very long commercials. ;)
Y'know, I like how Japanese shows cut down commercial time by just doing a 10-second "This program has been brought to you by . ." every half-hour instead. Wellll hmm, not sure if that's the real reason behind their shorter commercials . . could also be that the shows are much cheaper to make. I think they also do more in-show product placements, so I guess it balances out. Personally, I prefer product placements more than commercial breaks . . after all, it's less distracting seeing a Sony camera than a Zony camera. ;)
If you know the runtime of any other 1-hour show, let me know! I'm really curious, especially about program length in other countries like Britain, Australia, China, Mexico, etc. :)
