Well, I've been watching the World Figure Skating Championships on-and-off this week and suddenly, I realized something interesting. But also potentially offensive so . . .
Sometimes, figure skating feels like an underwear exhibition. Hey, you clicked, now you gotta stay with me here while I defend this point! ;)
Ok, first of all, so as not to sound any cruder, let's label the zone around the lower torso area "Exhibit A."
Now, I understand that an important part of figure skating is displaying one's leg flexibility. However, sometimes it's just really hard *not* to notice "Exhibit A" whenever a female skater grabs one leg up and glides DIRECTLY in front of the judges' booth and the camera.
Or say, in pair skating when the guy lifts the girl up, she stretches her legs apart, and the guy's spinning her around so everyone in the arena gets to see like some picture book at show-and-tell.
I now present to you Exhibit A!
Men have to stretch too, but the Exhibit A effect doesn't happen because they wear pants. Nearly all the women have skirts sewn to their costume, and I think that's where the blame lies. The purpose of a skirt is to hide what's underneath, and even if it's just the lower part of your bodysuit in this case, it still kinda makes you feel like you're seeing something that you're not suppose to. ^^;
Skirts vs. Pants . . now do you see what I mean?
The skirt's actually pretty superficial if you think about it; it doesn't make them faster, jump higher or cushion their fall much. It's probably just some traditional aesthetic thing that looks cool when they spin. And I don't know who came up with women-and-pants-don't-mix, but eh, maybe it's just that women's legs look better than men's. Have you ever heard someone say: "Damn, that guy has some fine-lookin' legs!" . . ?
But whatever, whether skirts or pants, I'll always love competitive figure skating. Not because of Exhibit A!! but just the grace, drama and tension of it all. The only difference is that now I keep imagining a group of oyaji huddled around a TV set. >_<
.
.
Anyway, I was hoping everyone at the Worlds would be performing better than at the Olympics since they're basically just doing the same program w/ a smaller audience and less pressure, but it seems like they're falling even MORE!! XD Also kinda sad that Arakawa and Slutskaya decided to skip town. :( The only skater that's really impressed me so far is Brian Joubert of France . . anyone who skates to James Bond and the Matrix AND wears a matching James Bond and Matrix outfit is a winner in my books.
BTW,
check this out. If you click on "Result" and then any skater, you can see how long the skater works out every week. For example, Sasha Cohen ranked #1 skates 24 hours a week, the Zhang/Zhang pair ranked #2 skate 28, and Matrix-Bond Joubert ranked #2 skates 32! Ironically, there's this male skater from Greece that's nearly dead last in the standings who skates 38!! o_O So obviously, more practice doesn't necessarily make perfect. ;)
And these drawings are amazing!! o__O
