Okies, here's another one of those mysteries solved Melinda-style. I heard this from somewhere, but red is easy to say "aka" and yellow can be "ki" and green is long "midori" so they (the Japanese at the time Japan got these things) decided to use "ao" instead.
Besides, young green leaves are "ao ba" so the line between green and blue in Japan is fuzzy in the first place. Even the (old) phrase "greenhorn" and the Japanese phrase "aonisai" "green" and "ao" are used in the same way.
But the Japanese kept the green color of the signal. Until now. Because now, blue LEDs exist. And if you look at new Japanese signals, they are our concept of blue, not green. That's only because the Japanese now always say "ao" without question and they think that it's only because blue LEDs were expensive and don't even consider that the original color is supposed to be green.
Mm, I think I got it. Thanks for debunking that mystery. :) I've seen some of those "more blue" traffic lights, but kids are still pointing at the "very green" ones and saying "blue" so I used that green pic as an example. Now does that make sense . . hm . .
omg, r u seriously in Tokyo those 2 day?! Cuz I'm in Tokyo those 2 days too~! Well, umm, I'm leaving on the 31st back to Cali, so technically I can only see u on the 30 but... umm... I'm gonna call u now^^;
