Something has been really bugging me recently, so I went out armed with my camera so I could share it with you.
From what I've heard, there was a big lease increase at the end of January that caused many stores all over Greater Vancouver to close. Here's just a few of the many closures I noticed since early February . .
CompuSmart has been here since I first visited the Vancouver Public Library next door in 1997. I used to window shop here whenever I missed my train home.
This newspaper shop has been a mainstay at Granville Station for as long as I can remember. I used to be entranced by its cool-looking ATM machine when I was younger.
I heard The Source @ Robson was having a closing sale, but by the time I got there . .
I can almost hear
lelola and
bluerose25 pulling out the tissues for this one.
Utsuwa no Yakata table wear, the only Japanese store I know of in Coquitlam. Now I know of none. :(
And right next door was the Dollar Store. I heard Dollar Stores are really hard to profit from these days.
The independent Canadian bookseller, Black Bonds Books, is now just a wall.
And lastly, one of my work places also closed down at the end of January. The new academy we merged with is much more spacious, but I liked the smell of the old one (as you can see, we were sandwiched between two cake shops ;) ).
Y'know, I've always hated how you can never really own a place. Even after investing all that money into your business, even if your business makes a profit every month, the rent can still kill you. And even though an average house costs a cut-throat $600k+ in Vancouver, you *still* need to pay thousands of dollars of property tax every year. Sometimes it seems near impossible to get started in this city unless you're already a millionaire . .
That's why I bought a permanent account on LJ. Even though I may not be blogging long enough to make up for the money I spent, I like how I never have to pay for it again. It's nice to actually really own something forever for a change.
But anyway, enough of death, here's a scene of life in the city to end the post . .

neonnurse!) The new eggs actually started hatching yesterday and here's an adorable picture I took last night:
Quiznos Ticker: The BBQ Smokehouse Chicken: A sandwich created by the "12 Chefs of Quiznos." Aaand . . it's a good sandwich, just expected more with all the hype. ^_^ Not really a fan of BBQ sauce, the main reason I tried it was that it was a Limited Time Offer. :P Grade: B+
