[REVIEW] Bokurano

Just cause I'm stuck on a cliffy and just need to vent out my feelings about this manga. A little disclaimer; I haven't watched the anime, save the OP/ED animation and a few short clips.

I read this late, so a belated review of Bokurano.

siruvi made me read this manga (thanks JunJun~ :'D). If she hadn't, and if she hadn't spoiled me about it, I probably would never even think about it. The art isn't something that I would like immensely, although I've grown to like it, and the summary... it just seem so cliched...

The story; fifteen kids, all in seventh grade except for one, who's younger, went to a summer school together. They went to the beach for a science expedition and they ended up exploring a cave. And deep within the cave they found what seem to be a small make-shift living place of someone, complete with computer and TV looking things.

The guy is Kokopelli, and he told the kids he's developing a 'game', where fifteen must take turn in piloting a powerful robot (which the kids later called Zearth), more powerful than any other weapon on earth. After this, the kids wake up on the beach, thinking it's all been a dream, until later on that day, the robot appeared in front fo them.

Sounds like a cliched shonen mecha story so far? Well it's not. "It's barely mecha", my buddy Silv said. And she's right; rather than robot vs. robot, Bokurano is about these kids. The kids who all come from different backgrounds, they lead different lives, they all have different views and personality.

There's more that make this manga un-cliched, but that'll be spoiling it, just give it a try, really. It's not for everyone, but if you like sad stories, this manga is worth a try. It can be cruel, inspiring, tragic, sweet, touching... It has love and lust, despair and hope, the selfish and the selfless, family matters, friendship- one thing for sure, there's no one in the cast that's truly despicable, at least, not to me.

A reviewer said about the anime; "it's designed to rip your soul out of your body and crush it"- I would say the same for the manga.

As a note, the songs for the anime is good too! I especially like their opening, Uninstall; it really sets the mood...
