Some Few to be Chewed and Digested

I love food. I love books. I really love books about food. I'm currently reading one entitled An Edible History of Humanity, which examines the way food shapes society and how changes in the food system change societies also. The most interesting thing I've learned so far is that there were no orange carrots until the 16th century. Before that time carrots came in white or purple; the variety we all think of as the Platonic ideal of "carrot" was created by Dutch horticulturalists to honor William of Orange.
