Oh What a Christmas to Have the Blues

I love Christmas. It really is the most wonderful time of the year, except for the whole winter cold snow thing. But I'm perfectly happy with it being the most wonderful time of the year for a month instead of starting the day after Halloween. I went grocery shopping for Thanksgiving fixins yesterday and was irritated by the Christmas tunes in the background.

But even worse then early Christmas music is inappropriate Christmas music. While I was looking for white wine vinegar I was startled to hear Joni Mitchell's "River" start to play. Yes, it does contain the word Christmas, but this is not a Christmas song. It's about guilt and regret for sabotaging a relationship. It's one of the saddest songs I know. There isn't a jolly happy soul to be found, so it really doesn't belong in a rotation with "Frosty the Snowman".

I know there's other non-cheery Christmas music: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Please Come Home For Christmas", etc. I actually like those better than Frosty; sometimes a little wistfulness seems more appropriate than the saccharine overdose of kiddie Christmas tunes. But those at least have am element of hope in them where "River" is all misery and pain. Way to kill my Christmas buzz, Safeway, four days before I even got it going.

Things I like on the internet today:
Why turkeys are called turkeys
10 Thanksgiving traditions. Did you know FDR tried to move Thanksgiving up a week during the Depression to improve retail sales? Maybe we should've put that in the bailout package.
Sexy women make everyone insecure. Sorry everybody!
