The escalator at my metro stop is out of order. It has been for months, which irritates me but doesn't in itself spell the end of the road for the US of A. Without an escalator, the options are an elevator and a flight of 40 stairs. Yes, I counted. That's no big deal, unlike climbing up from Dupont Circle when that escalator is out, which leaves me wheezing at the top. Yet there is always a line of seemingly able-bodied people in front of the elevator who can't be bothered to walk up 40 measly steps. But wait, there's more. This morning I was unusually awake on my morning commute (I usually don't reach full consciousness until around lunchtime) and I happened to glance over at the elevator. And there I saw a line of seemingly able-bodied people who could't be bothered to walk DOWN 40 measly steps. This is why we will all die of heart disease, and probably very soon.
