Abby Sciuto's Office, All day Tuesday

Sep 05, 2006 10:03

Abby knew that it was possible that some of her new students wouldn't have computers. So she made some phone calls and and settled down in her office to see if any students showed up.

She busied herself by working on her lesson plans. Or by playing Halo 2. Whichever.

Door follows the map of the school from her packet of new-student things well enough; she knocks on the doorframe shortly after receiving Professor Sciuto's message.

"Hello?" And there's always the wait, to see if she'll be noticed there or not. "I'm Door. You left me a message." If she still sounds surprised at that, it's only because she is.

"Hi, Door!" Abby grinned happily and motioned her inside. "I did leave you a message. You're here for a computer?"

"I suppose so, yes." Door nods. "I've never used one before. I'm not sure if they'll work for me; I might be wasting your time."

"You're in luck because I'm offering crash courses in computer technology today." Abby grinned and pointed at a seat. "A computer wouldn't dare work for you in my office. It knows what I can do to it if it misbehaves."

Door takes this quite seriously. "It must be nice to have machines listen to you," she says as she sits down. "Modern ones don't tend to acknowledge I'm there, though the phone did today. That was odd."

Abby gave a silent cry of 'not another one' and smiled. "That's...nice. Okay, here's a laptop. The button on the side there turns it on. Go ahead and try it."

Door tentatively presses the button on the side, and waits for it to do nothing. Surprisingly, (though at this point perhaps she should start being surprised by things acting the way they normally would) the screen lights up.

"I've seen this," she says, tilting her head. Just through shop windows, though."

"So it's not completely unknown to you? That's great." Abby grinned. "Alright, this is the desktop and each picture is a program that does something different. You can use this..." She waved the mouse around. "..to click on a picture and do something. Why don't you click on the picture of a blue notepad?"

Desktop, Door comprehends, though program is a bit meaningless at this point. Still, she gamely takes the small plastic thing and moves it about until the arrow on the screen is over the notepad, then clicks. Most of the screen goes white.

Door looks up. "Did I break it?"

"Nope, not at all. This is what it's supposed to look like." Abby pointed at the keyboard. "Now you can type whatever you want and it'll show up on the screen. This program is good for writing notes or keeping a diary."

Frowning at the keyboard, Door slowly types out her name. In lowercase, since the SHIFT key is as yet a Thing of Mystery to her.

"Does it do capital letters?"

Abby tried not to grimace at the slow typing and nodded. "Yes, the same keys do capital letters if you press the SHIFT key and hold it down."

Door tries it, and grins. "It's like a typewriter. I played about with one of those when I was small, but it didn't make any marks because we didn't have a ribbon for it. Plus half the keys were missing."

"It's a lot like a typewriter only much, much better." Abby said, patting the laptop wistfully. "Now that you know the basics, I think you're ready to fill out the form to make this computer your very own for the next 15 weeks."

Door blinks a bit at '15 weeks' but only because she's been thinking in terms of 'where do I sleep tomorrow' for a while now. "Thank you. I'll take good care of it."

"I'm sure you will." Abby handed over the form and gave her a pen to fill it out. "This is just the basics so we know who has it and where to come if you make off with our not-quite state-of-the-art technology."
