Chapter Six:
The sun shone harshly on Sungyeol’s windshield as he drove to Seoul Concert House It was the third of April, the day of Swan Lake. Unfortunately, it was also the day of his Piano Concerto, something he could never afford to miss. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, to be picked as the school’s representative for Piano. He surpassed a lot of his seniors for this position. Myungsoo would just have to go to the play.
Then his phone vibrated inside his pocket. A text message from Myungsoo.
Sungyeol-ah, I can’t go. I have my Violin Recitals today. Sorry.
Oh. My. God. The play starts at 3:30 and his concerto ends at 3. Shit.
Sungyeol was a guy who didn’t believe in utter miracles, but he just had to believe this time.
Will I go? She won’t care if I don’t, right?

The third of April. From behind the velvet curtains, the whole Sparkling Dance Committee was a hodgepodge of stress and frazzled nerves. They were running late on schedule. By a sunburst mirror, Miyoung was getting her make-up finalized.
“There. You’re done.” The coordi said after putting almost a gallon of pearl foundation on Miyoung’s face. She needed to glow, the coordi pointed out.
Miyoung stood up and gave the coordi a small bow for her service. She inhaled and exhaled, soothing her nerves before the play started. She took a little peek at the audience, carefully maneuvering herself so that she would stay hidden. The concert hall was packed, as expected. She looked around even more, hoping to see that one person she would dedicate the performance to. Kim Myungsoo.
The seat reserved for the boy was empty.
Except there was no time to sulk. The overture was starting.
Enter stage right…Don’t drop your character. Tears can’t flow on the swan’s face.
----------------------------------
Seoul traffic had never been this worse. Sungyeol sat behind the wheel, agitated. He had made a wonderful performance, but he didn’t have time to bask in the glory of his standing ovation. But that didn’t matter now. The play already started and here he was, meters from the school, but stuck in non-moving traffic. Adding to that was the length he had to cover once he was inside the campus, for the Concert Hall was located at the very back.
He honked his horn for the nth time. This won’t work. He then pulled over to the sidewalk-screw those Tow-Away Vehicles-he had to be there. At least to explain Myungsoo’s absence. Sungyeol practically kicked the car door open and ran. As fast as he could. Myungsoo would have to pay for the tow-away rate later. It was his fault he was doing all of these.
He was panting hard the moment he entered the Concert Hall. All eyes were on the Swan, including his own, for the play was nearing its climax. He stood there, on the top of the stairs, motionless, until an usher took his ticket and led him to the front row seat that was originally reserved for Myungsoo. But, he was better than nothing, right? Instead of answering his question his eyes just locked on the Swan Queen on the stage in front of him.
There was a sweet smile on the Swan Queen’s pearl-escent face.
--------------------
Even with a heart that was as heavy as lead, Miyoung still performed and executed her routines impeccably. The audience was captivated in each scene; with each jeté and pirouette, the audience was awed. Too bad he wasn’t here to see her performance.
But then, she saw the doors open. A boy suddenly went in, frozen at the top of the hall’s stairs. Myungsoo? Oh wait, no…Taking a closer look, it wasn’t the stoic ulzzang at all. It was Sungyeol, panting and puffing, and being ushered to the seat that was originally Myungsoo’s. Oh, well. He’s better than nothing, right? And maybe, Myungsoo sent him here or something.
That thought put the smile on the swan’s pearl-escent face. Nothing’s over until it’s over, right?
---------------------
The play ended with the actors’ bow met with a roaring standing ovation. The Dance Council was awed. Sponsors were now on the line for Seoul’s hottest prima ballerina. Sungyeol had a hard time pushing to go backstage, and without a permitting text from Miss Mimi, he wouldn’t have entered the premises.
“Lee Sungyeol!” Miyoung exclaimed, running towards the giant of boy to give him a small hug. “How was I?”
“You did great troublesome Tutu.” Sungyeol joked while trying his best to hide his blush.
“Troublesome? What did I do this time, freak?” Miyoung exclaimed, but Sungyeol knew that “freak” was already the girl’s term of endearment for him.
“My Concerto finished at 3 and I didn’t even have time to bask in the glory of my standing ovation.” Sungyeol explained after giving Miyoung a small push on the forehead. “I got stuck in traffic going here and I had to run almost a kilometer just to be here before the play ended! And I’m betting my Audi got towed already.”
“Yah, no one told you to come here.” Miyoung teased, crossing her arms in front of her sequined bodice.
“Mwo? Aish…Ungrateful little brat.” Sungyeol whined, scratching his head in annoyance.
“I was joking, flathead.” Miyoung said, reaching upwards to pinch one of the boy’s chubby cheeks. “Where’s Myungsoo?” she asked, her face filled with hope.
“Strings Recital.” Sungyeol bluntly answered, and all the hope from Miyoung’s face vanished almost instantly.
“Oh” Miyoung said, her tone a bit on the sad side. “He didn’t tell me he had Recitals…”
“Yah, cheer up, Tutu!” Sungyeol exclaimed, patting the girl on the back. “Myungsoo didn’t mean to not tell you, I’m sure of it. And you did a freaking awesome job on stage. So, don’t mind it.”
“I guess so.” Miyoung replied, giving the tall boy a somewhat bitter smile. He might be right. There had to be a reason to Myungsoo’s absence.
“Yah, if my car hasn’t been towed, I’ll drive you home, kay?”
Miyoung could only nod. She left the boy to change into a more comfortable outfit and went to where the Audi was supposedly parked. Miraculously, the silvery vehicle was still there, although a parking ticket with a whopping fine was slipped onto its wiper.
“Gah, Myungsoo’s paying for this.” Sungyeol said, awing at the amount written on the ticket. Good thing he’s planning to convince the stoic ulzzang to pay for the fines. That would be easy. The kid may be stoic but he still had a sense of responsibility.
Miyoung chuckled at the giant’s childishness. At least he was there. And he’s someone who you could always count on to drive you home.
If only I liked him instead of Mr. Mystery Myungsoo…
