You know, I'm not a person who is ashamed of admitting that I was, and still am, a Blink 182 fan. I have been for years. Untitled is still one of the greatest songs lyrically in my mind... and dumpweed is some great punk rock.
Others would argue.
One thing I do not feel anyone can disagree with completely is the simple fact that Blink 182 was greater than the sum of its parts.
Mark and Travis are in +44, and Tom is in Angels and Airwaves.
Now, with that being said, the little rift between them is in both albums.... not so subtlely placed in the lyrics, and the timing of the releases.
Anyways, I broke down and listened to both "When your heart stops beating" and "We don't need to whisper" end to end.
Then I listened to my Blink 182 compilation I made many months ago.
Its like listen to Peter Cetera with Amy Grant, and Chicago 23, then going back to Chicago 1. Or for those of you who are not musically inclined... its like watching Michael Jordan play for the wizards... and watching tapes of the Bulls when he was "retired" the first time. Then watching their last championship game.
Its hard to believe that these three guys could make the awesome music they did. Listen, its not that either album sucks... ok... they kind of suck. But I can HEAR in the albums... where they need each other. Um, who ever is doing the tenor vocals for +44 please throw yourself in front of a bus.
Will the drummer for Angels and Airwaves please stop pretending to be "the blur." You're not.
With that being said, I placed a bet today at work that there will be a new blink 182 album out before my 30th birthday.
I have to say, I have no shame in saying I am a blink 182 fan. But I see great shame in what those guys produced seperately. Don't call it music. Congrats guys, you just found out why Billy Joe Armstrong would NEVER EVER consider a solo career. Ever.
Ever.
....and Tre's got serious DSL.
outs.
