[He'd spent the last several hours looking through posts made to the network, analyzing his situation. He'd surmised some things from the posts from other recent arrivals here, but Kurapica still felt as though he was missing information. His current situation was beyond the scope of what the network posts could entirely communicate; he needed ( Read more... )

[There's shock in her voice, for obvious reasons, and it's not till a moment later that she remembers with some sadness that he won't remember her. The melancholy is apparent when she speaks again, switching to video with her composure in tact.]

Sorry, you won't remember me. My name is Sango. Killua and Gon are here, and all of the others are right where you remember them being.

How much have you been told?

[Another person who behaves as if they're familiar with him? Furthermore:]

You know Killua and Gon? [He frowns in concentration.] I've spoken with Killua. He's told me basic information about our situation.

...And also that I've been here once before, though I can't remember such a circumstance.

[Her heart sinks a little. She can hear the quiet reservedness, the walls he's put up, the lock and key. But it's not as if she can blame him.]

I know them both, and I know you. Because yes, you've been here before, and no, it's not unusual that you don't remember; the Animus seem to be particular about that.

[And once again, Kurapica latches onto the unknown information and produces a question from it, rather than paying full attention to his previous relationships.]

I've read and learned some about these Animus. I assume they always instill amnesia in a person who disappears and reappears here a second time? Why is that?

[Oh, Pica. xD]

You'd have to ask them, I suppose. If I had to guess it would be because they're fond of causing emotional distress.

[He gives new meaning to knowledge first, friendship later.]

Emotional...distress? [Well, it's effective in causing confusion, at least.] Then the purpose of our being here has to do with the Animus playing mind games?

Much of it. They vary between physical and mental torments in week-long periods nicknamed events, which happen every other week. They can vary from floods to hallucinating the graves and death scenes of those you hold dear, to give a few examples.

[Great. Though he doesn't remember it, Kurapika's said it before:]

That kind of motivation can be the most dangerous for its unpredictability and tenacity. If so, we're simply pawns or experiments in a meaningless game for them.

Damn it.

Unfortunately, that's what it would seem like.

[He takes a moment to regain his composure before he responds again. There's no use letting himself stress about it at such a crucial time as now.]

...I see. You made it seem as if these events happen in a consistent pattern?

Pretty consistently, every other week, though their nature varies.

...

...
[He's silent for a moment as he thinks about that. It's...not a good situation. It's too unpredictable of an environment, and he needs to get back to his mission.]

Examples?

Physical: there was a week when the entire city was laid out with traps, and one when it was flooded, and one when another city appeared in the Wastes and we were faced with zombies.

Mental: a week when we hallucinated the gravestones and death scenes of loved ones, a week where our personalities were changed drastically, and a week where we forgot our pasts outside of this place.
