Characters: Abarai Renji, Hitsugaya Toushirou
When: April 18, evening
Where: Renji's place, Fifth Division
Rating: PG-13 at the least
Summary: Renji found something in the Octava's lab and it's time to return it to its rightful owner.

Hitsugaya spent a long moment simply staring down at the phone in his hand. Conflicting emotions -- some of them he had no business even acknowledging -- kept him still. There was anger; oh was there anger and he wasn't sure it was entirely justified. He'd heard rumors before he'd heard from Abarai and that just... somehow struck him. Hell, he knew good and well that things would have been crazy for Abarai when he got back. And, honestly, any personal stake he'd put on the Octava's life or death was his own doing. No one owed him information.

The Octava was dead. He should be relieved. He was relieved but, somehow he also felt cheated. He couldn't deny that he wanted a shot the Octava himself; part of him felt like he deserved it.

Half of Seireitei probably felt like they deserved it.

And all that was before Abarai's message. Hitsugaya sighed as he put the phone away and slid into shunpo. It wouldn't take him long to make his way to the Fifth this way and he should get moving before he talked himself out of it. Who knew what Abarai had found in that lab that might interest him. Files? Video? Photos? Not thoughts he wanted to entertain, but all he could think about were the damning possibilities.

He should have told Abarai to just destroy it, whatever it was. Curiosity had him, though. Curiosity and the knowledge that some things he couldn't run away from. This was one of them.

He navigated the Fifth's division grounds without pause; it was almost strange how this division was nearly as familiar as his own. With Hinamori here, he'd spent a lot of time here, even before Abarai became captain. He was close now, close enough that, if Abarai was paying attention, Hitsugaya's reiatsu would be clear; too late to lose what nerve he had.

He stopped outside Abarai's quarters, took a breath, and knocked softly.

Time to end this.

... Or begin it, depending on what Abarai handed him.

[soul society], abarai renji, hitsugaya toushirou
