It hadn't been quite two months since Isane had visited Kiyone's grave; that was back in January, on the anniversary of her death. That day was important to remember, even though Isane no longer felt she needed to come to the cemetery on a strict weekly basis like she had for over two years. She'd noticed at some point that it was becoming easier and easier to live without her sister there, and as sad as that thought was in and of itself, the peace that it afforded in the aftermath of the heartbreak was so relieving. The realization that she didn't have to feel guilty about enjoying her life was a concept she still grappled with at times, but it too was gradually settling into her heart ( ... )

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Renji had felt Isane coming, but it didn't really register until she spoke. That was when he started so viciously he might have toppled backward if he had been crouching. Thankfully he had one knee on the ground, so he didn't fall...he just nearly jumped out of his skin.

"I-Isane!" he gasped, visibly startled, and an almost guilty look swept across his features. "I...uh..." Well, now what? It was pretty weird to admit he'd come to talk to her dead sister about their relationship...she'd probably wonder if he had a fever. He shot the headstone a sidelong glance. Real clever, he thought in Kiyone's general direction.

Getting quickly back to his feet and dusting off the knees of his hakama, Renji awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a bit foolish.

"Fancy meeting you here," he chortled, shaking his head. "Ah...I was just..." Asking if she minded if I dated her big sister. "Well, I wasn't sure if she...you know...knew yet, so ( ... )

With a squeak of surprise, Isane hopped back a step when Renji jumped at her appearance, startled by his reaction. He must have had a lot on his mind if he hadn't noticed her coming up the way. She laughed when he clambered to his feet, though her heart was beating just a tad faster now than a moment before.

"Funny meeting you here," she echoed, adding her own emphasis. It wasn't unusual for her to be here, cleaning the grave site or telling Kiyone about things that had happened in her life. Apparently Renji had gotten the idea to do the same thing.

A light flush rose to Isane's cheeks when Renji admitted he'd actually been talking to her sister about their relationship. "To be honest, she knew about it before you did," she told him. "When I dated in the past, she always grilled my boyfriends." Kiyone had hounded any suitor who dared sniff around her sister, since she just knew they all had dirty intentions. Isane lowered her head and grinned. "I'm sure she's glad that you came to talk to her."

He grinned as she explained how Kiyone was so critical of her previous boyfriends. He supposed he shouldn't have been surprised--Hinamori wasn't even his actual little sister and she was often quite critical of Renji's personal life. She had known he was in love with Rukia long before he acknowledged it himself. He could only imagine the intuitions of a real little sister.

With a laugh, he got to his feet and stepped back, allowing her access to the gravestone then.

"I guess I should'a known she knew already," he said, folding his hands into his sleeves. Then he gave Isane a very srs serious look. "Well I just told her that my intentions were honorable," he assured her. "And I can't lie my way out of a paper bag, so...here's hoping she believes me."

As silly as this scenario seemed, Isane really was touched by the fact that Renji was serious enough about their still-fresh (and slightly awkward) relationship that he would think to seek the blessing of her little sister. She determined that she would have to make him take her out to the hill in Inuzuri where he'd told her that his childhood friends had been buried so she could return the gesture.

Of course, getting the blessings of friends and family who were no longer physically there to object was one thing. It was the people who were still alive that she was more concerned about. Of course, Isane knew that Unohana-taichou would never object to them being together, even if she did terrorize tease Renji a bit on principle. She could only hope that his friends would feel the same way. Granted, she knew that the two of them didn't actually need anyone's permission, but knowing others thought well of them did make things easier ( ... )
