Indifferent or not, there were others who spent their lives skulking about in the shadows, and Kurotsuchi Mayuri was one of them. There was good reason for that -- attracting attention to himself meant attracting attention to the things he was doing, and on this occassion the thing he was doing was following a certain Espada around the Seireitei ( ... )

He probably would not take kindly to being treated as a guinea pig, especially by a Shinigami that held a like scientific mind to that of their own Octava Espada. So long as no one was thinking to engage him in a hostile manner, Ulquiorra did not concern himself with the presence that he felt just at the fringes of his Pesquisa scope, now and then. He already knew it had to belong to a high-ranked Shinigami, and he knew that in this place, they were perfectly entitled to having their own concerns about an Arrancar, let alone an Espada, wandering their territory ( ... )

If Ulquiorra had suggested to him any kind of similarity between himself and the Octava Espada, he would have naturally laughed in his face outright. The very idea of it. Him, similiar to that abhoration of Aizen's creation. It was ridiculous -- and it would belittle the Cuarta in his mind to suggest it ( ... )

The little things that people did not normally think to pay notice to, the nuances that were easily overlooked- they had become something Ulquiorra took extra care to notice once he first realized he was being followed. Of course he wouldn't say when that had been, but it had been a little longer since he wished to verify his suspicions.

Mayuri's sudden appearance did not seem to faze the Espada in the least. The shinigami had long been running about with reiatsu-cloaking devices in and outside of Hueco Mundo, so it was certainly of no surprise to find that something had been devised to cloak one's form. Slowly, perhaps even casually, Ulquiorra turned to fully face the Gotei Captain. He said nothing as he regarded the other in his usual silence.

"A while ago," he finally replied, when it had appeared that he might not respond at all. "Was there nothing better for the captain of the Twelfth to do?"

"Interesting."

He glid away from the wall, careful to keep some distance from the Cuarta. He was certain that in a fight the Espada would have trouble with him, but he had no intention of starting one. They could always speak together, after all.

"I have a Division full of capable subordinates to do 'better things' for me, freeing me up to abuse my position as I see fit," he chided, sweetly, looking over the Arrancar now that they were out in the open. "I have been testing effective methods of tracking your movements. Important enough work for the captain of the Twelfth to do." He had no problem with revealing it. If he did, the Espada might make an effort to test his system rather than simply walking down the mainstreets. It would be more challenging if he thought he could escape notice.
