But these places and these faces are getting old )
Sachiko never seemed to sit still. Not even on a Sunday, when the library was closed and the coffee shop she worked at sometimes hadn't needed a hand and her captain had already scolded her three times for even showing up at the office today because really, was she trying to bankrupt the Fifth, paying her all this overtime? She had insisted she was just reorganizing her desk (which was sort of true) and didn't expect to be paid for it (also true), but Renji had shooed her out the door nonetheless (well what was he doing at the office on a Sunday??). And so now she just had a box of paperclips in her sleeve and...a free afternoon.
What was she supposed to do with that??
She had already watered the plants and made sure her three bookshelves were in order...the Monday-morning memos were done already. Seriously, what was she--?
"Ah?" What was that? Music? While it wasn't uncommon to hear music in Rukongai on a hot, lazy afternoon, it wasn't usually something one heard within the walls of Seireitei. Which was a damn shame, in her opinion. It couldn't be that none of the officers could carry a tune (though she'd heard her captain couldn't sing if his life depended on it...).
Her anxiety on how to fill the afternoon momentarily forgotten, Sachiko headed down a sidestreet, following the sounds of the stringed instrument being strummed. It didn't sound quite like anything she'd ever heard before, and as she drew closer, the faint sounds of a clear voice were layered over it. Oh how delightful! It seemed there was musical talent in Seireitei after all! Now she had to find out who it was! And what manner of strange instrument they were playing!
Surprise was scrawled all over her face when she turned a corner and spotted Hisagi Shuuhei of all people seated in the dusty alley between two large buildings, some sort of peculiar instrument (from the living world, she supposed) balanced across his lap. She stood there a moment in the mouth of the alley, just watching him, and a smile rose unbidden to her expression.
The melody was simple and charming, the lyrics heartfelt, and Sachiko just found herself staring until he strummed a final chord and the sound died away in the clear, still air.
She brought her hands up and applauded heartily.
