Canon: What does the world do when wars get too problematic and costly for them to run? Why, set up overly-complicated chess games as a substitute! Except these chess pieces are special. For one, they're alive and kicking with no clue about their newfound destinies. That's the situation Kazuki and his not!twin lookalike Haruki find themselves in when an unknown force takes over their school on their birthday and forces them to play by its rules. Let the games begin! Just remember... the consequences are real.
Koutake Haruki is a king piece, as well as Kazuki's closest childhood friend. As Class President, Haruki is intelligent, dependable and strongly reserved. He maintains a calm, masked demeanor to everyone around him, to reassure and to avoid people worrying for his sake. Still, Haruki is known to lose his cool in the face of other people's pain and to take things dead seriously, often scaring everyone around him. Kind and deeply sensitive, Haruki is willing to go the extra mile to protect the people around him. Everyone else might be okay with living in a game, but Haruki intends to turn the tables back to reality.

Must we waste our time like this, on these fanciful games for your, ah, unique taste in partnerships? Yes, the zombies drool and their reaction time is slow, but they were people once and I insist you treat them as such. Coiling your tentacles around their ankles subtly is not showing off your character at the moment so please stop. Since you're insisting on this chess match as my means to proceed forward, then I will humour you in this game. But I will not let you off so lightly. What you have subjected the people of the swamp to is horrible, and I feel a lesson is in order here. I am getting tired of seeing atrocities performed in front of me as if to show off my helplessness at these situations. Shall we raise the stakes? If I win, then you will release these people from your bondage... If you win, you get me. Does that seem acceptable? Good. Then let us move on ... with your move. I've already finished mine.
While you are contemplating, we should fill the silence with some conversation, preferably something that's not to do with morbid game-play. I'm used to hearing someone jabber while I work. Heh, you could say it's almost like a security blanket for me. Not that I could ever truly be secure with you, Marcy-san. You have this annoying habit of distracting me by rubbing my ankle continuously. I can tell you right now that any overtures you make will be in vain. For one, you tried to manipulate me and these people. Secondly ... I'm afraid I prefer my own species over yours. Thirdly, despite my glasses, my eyesight is quite capable and you still haven't made your move, despite your attempts to avoid the issue and distract me with your provocativeness. Though, if you were human, you might have been more successful in that area. My condolences, but that doesn't change the fact you are trying to avoid making your move. Should I set a time limit to speed things up for you? I do not know what your lifespan may be, but I can assure you, I don't have forever. Though it's quite a change to see you so shy, Marcy-san. Perhaps there's hope for you yet.
If you would permit me to ask... why do you do this? Why do you try to ensnare people this way? Do you have no consideration for people's lives at all? How can you live like this, day after day, treating these people as if they can be nothing better?! But then... you aren't a person. I suppose you could never truly understand the way we feel. Maybe I can't show you that, but I will end this reign of yours, this tyranny you've inflicted on these people. They may only be shells of their former selves, but that doesn't give you the right to abuse them any way you see fit. I shall see to it personally.
Checkmate, Marcy-san. Have a nice day.
