Lentil dhal, or, How to feed 6 people for about £1!

A while ago a friend, woodjuice, mentioned making lentil dhal in passing on her journal and my ears (eyes?) pricked up. I love lentil dhal, I always order it from the takeaway yet for some stupid reason until this point it had never occurred to me to make my own. Duh! MMmm, dal is delicious. I sometimes do mine with curry instead of garam marsala, or I'll add some chopped up carrots and celery. The vegetables cook down to a puree, very smooth.

can you tell me though- do you mean 6 oz red lentils from a can? or do you prepare the lentils yourself? or what?

It was just 6oz of dried red lentils, rinsed before being used. Just stuck them in raw and they cook down into a lovely mushy texture!
