Proposition 8

You know, I do not really write in my livejournal often, but I really felt as if this warranted some type of response.

Obviously yesterday was election day here in the good ol' United States. We found ourselves voting on presidential candidates, senate and house members and governors (in some states). Well, some states also found themselves voting on issues such as Proposition 8, which would ban same-sex marriage in California.

My first question is, if this is the "land of the free" and the "home of the brave", why are we even voting on such an issue? Really, banning same-sex marriage really does not benefit heterosexual couples in any way, will it? Your marriage is not going to instantly become worse because same-sex couples can get married. If it gets worse, it's because you made it worse. I also personally feel that only a coward would vote against something he or she could not completely understand.

Do you understand what it is like for a gay person to grow up in this nation? Hell, so many people are even scared to "come out of the closet" because of it. So, when we finally realize what we need to be happy, this nation wants to take it from us? While I personally have no boyfriend or prospects of marriage, the option would be nice should I desire to exercise it in the future.

I would like to compare this situation to what I do best - Video Games. In the middle of the year a video game conference was held, E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). E3 is one of the biggest shows (usually, except this year sucked) of the year, showcasing new video games that are coming for all major platforms. I know a lot of people saw a special announcement - that Final Fantasy XIII would be coming to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in North America. As soon as that announcement was made, the internet was in an uproar over the situation. Final Fantasy XII was no longer a Playstation 3 exclusive, which meant that those who had purchased a Playstation 3 specifically for the game had no reason to. However, Final Fantasy XIII will still be on the Playstation 3. It just means now that MORE people can enjoy it. Whether or not it is released on Xbox 360 is irrelevant. That's exactly how I feel about this same-sex marriage situation. Whether or not same-sex marriages will be permitted has absolutely no effect on whether or not you can enjoy your marriage to your loved one. It's simply now across multiple "platforms", which means MORE people can enjoy it.

Also, while you are busy trying to figure out whether Joe and Ted can get married, we can watch the economy further plummet, watch retirement savings fall through the floor, watch our jobs get cut and watch our kids not go to college because we can no longer afford it. Oh and what about your health care costs? Yeah. Why don't you put things into perspective here? Is Joe and Ted's ability to get married more important than YOUR future? Obviously it is to some people, otherwise I would not even have to post this.
