For a while I've been not well. First it was pretty mild. Little head cold thing, mild fever, sore throat. No big deal. The doc thought it was a typical streppy throat and i agreed and I went home with a box of amoxicillin. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Except my daughter has had a wretched cough for the past three weeks that attacks in spasms and sometimes ends with her vomiting... and prevents her from sleeping until the wee hours of the morning. She was diadnosed with allergies and her symptoms were put down to an asthmatic reation to pollen allergens.
Some of you will know where i'm going with this.
Four days ago my mild morning cough mutated into a chest wrenching monstrocity which leaves me gasping and gagging. It stages sneak attacks. i will be fine for maybe several hours and then suddenly I'll coughing my lungs up on and off for the next thirty or so minutes. Night time has been particularly fun. No way to sleep when everytime I start to drift off I'm forced awake and have to sit up for up to half an hour hacking away.
Yesterday we were both diagnosed with pertussis. Yup, whooping cough. I'd heard that it was going around but i never dreamed I'd catch the bloody thing myself.
Currently it's 2:45 am and I'm sitting here with my daughter. Both of us unable to sleep due to coughing spasms. My daughter is having problems tonight with her aching stomach muscles and nausea from coughing. She is sitting on my lap weeping in frustration. I am so tired after nights of poor broken cough haunted sleep. The thought that we have maybe months of this to cross yet is so damn depressing. I have the next week off on sick leave while the A.B.'s kick in but i don't know how I'm going to cope after with work/ sleep/ and family. A.B.'s, by the way, do nothing to alter the course of the disease. they only render you non infectious. So far my web research has told me that we may have up to three months of this before we recover. Oh the fun of that.
Cough has settled again though my throat feels like raw meat. Going to try to go to bed again.
