Clearly, it takes money to run an election campaign.  There's increased scrutiny over the sources of funds, some of which are more innocent than others, but a general rule is that you receive money from folks that anticipate that your election would advance their own interests/ideals.  That's fine, but then it puts pressure on candidates to give ( Read more... )

The only problem is that under the current rules if a candidate took money for a campaign from pepsi, then went out and endorsed pepsi, it would be illegal. The rules on campaign donations are framed around the idea of it being a purely nonprofit venture, so if you provide equitable services in exchange for the "donation", its illegal. Ironaclly, the rules designed to encourage honest campaigning just prevent politicians from being honest about their intentions and affiliations.

It would be amusing to see a KFC candidate going up against a Bojangles one, the debate wouldn't be any more pointless then current ones, but at least it would be funnier.

That's true, it is illegal, but like it or not, politicians respond to their sources of funding. I'm saying that I'd prefer that the law permitted the endorsement be overt and about something that doesn't matter (like cola preference) rather than veiled and about something that does (like health care policy).
