003: Disturbing Dreams

Jun 25, 2013 15:11

Today's schoolday was fun, but why do we get so much homework? :( I've been spending all of my time writing assignment after assignment! My computer's even protesting because I've been maxing out the RAM doing research~! I'm so tired by it all, but when I crawl off to bed, even that isn't restful ( Read more... )

school, homework, dreams, tired

But, isn't there no pain in dreams? At least, no physical pain?

It's considered perfectly normal to feel pain in a dream. Though unlike when we feel pain while we're awake, pain in our dreams is typically associated with memories. Just like when we dream of the sky, our mind tells us it should be blue even though we're not really seeing it, or if we feel grass beneath our feet in a dream, we will know what that feels like even though it's not really happening. The same can be said with feeling pain. If you see a hot pan on a stove in your dream and try to touch it, you will feel like you've just burnt yourself because your mind knows from memories that this is what should happen. Of course, when you wake back up, you're not going to really be burnt, though you may still feel some lingering sensations associated with being in a hypnopompic state still. That's most likely what Osakada-san was experiencing.

So it's normal then? To have lingering pain after having pain in a dream?

Yes, it's normal. Though if it feels like it's lingering for too long, your mind and nervous system might be taking a bit longer than it should to recognize that it's not really happening.
I'm personally more concerned about the fact that you seem to be having reoccurring dreams regarding these kinds of elements. Hiyoshi-kun has mentioned having rather troubling dreams as well. This is not good for either of you nor your health.

It never stays for too long, the pain. Just a couple of minutes, usually. Well, I can't figure out what's stimulating my dreams, so it's difficult to get rid of them. I've had them for a long time though, sensei. It's just, never this badly....

I guess now my body knows what actual blood and pain looks and feels like, it's influencing my dreams too. I had another painful one tonight, except I was killing myself? If that makes any sense.

If it's only for a few minutes, then that's alright. You're still in a hypnopompic (waking mind) state during the first few minutes after you wake up, so your brain is still trying to process what is going on around you at that time.

Do you think the accident you were involved in could be influencing the dreams? Though you say this has been going on for a long time. Have you had any other troubling situations that you can recall that might be affecting thing as well?

Okay, cool. Will we be learning about dreams and stuff in class? You know so much about them~!

Maybe. I don't know, it only started really getting gruesome after I came to RAGS, so I'm not sure whether that's the main cause. Though... it might be why I'm feeling pain all of a sudden. Any other situations? Not really... I'm really not sure, sensei.

In my mutant psychology and psychological history classes, yes, I've got plans for lessons on dreams. Though we won't be getting to them until after summer break.

Hmm... Well, considering some of the other students appear to be having troublesome dreams as well, there may be more to this than I originally imagined. Though it's possible that in your case, at least, it could be a combination of things. I'm going to be looking into matters, though, since we seem to be having several of you with sleeping issues and odd dreams.

...Oh. Hmm. I don't know about hot pans, but for me, blades don't hurt, chainsaws don't hurt. I guess I'm just lucky in that respect.

[ooc: Learning something new every day, haha. Is it normal not to feel pain? Ahhhh Because that's me xD; Theory is that emotion is what's being suppressed in everyday life so is what manifests while asleep, while physical pain is transient so doesn't really matter :x]

Not everyone experiences it. Some do, some don't, and some only do part of the time. It just depends on that person's mind, I suppose. I myself only feel pain in dreams on very rare occasions. But you are lucky if your mind doesn't make you feel the pain of however you are being hurt in your dreams.

[OOC: I myself don't normally feel any pain if something that's supposed to be painful happens to me in my dreams. I just end up waking up with a start. But like he said, it's different for everyone.]
