What I Saw: Rectify, Season 2, Episodes 5 and 6

The Holden's kitchen is still messed and torn up.

Time has begun to move fast. These episodes covered five days.

The prosecuting attorney has gained thirty pounds in less than two weeks. She has my kind of metabolism. But she is still pretty so that takes the pounds back off.

The prosecuting attorney and the former prosecuting attorney, now state senator and diner waitress sexual harasser, are trying to put Daniel back in prison, if not on death row. Daniel and his family, except for Teddy, the Wicked Stepbrother (see, I finally got a name for him), seem to be unaware of the possibility of such a thing happening. Only Amantha (because she is a Pessimist and a bad roller skater) and the Barry Scheck lawyer (because he is a defense lawyer and an excellent roller skater) are aware that such a thing could happen. Well, all that fun helping Daniel tear up the kitchen will soon come to an end when the prosecutors come over to tear up Daniel and the Holden's lives. Boy, will Teddy wish that he kept his big mouth as shut as his butt cheeks about Daniel and those insinuating coffee grounds.

Like me, Daniel and the writers missed the Goat Guy from last season, so Daniel gets to met his next mentor and life guru in LeZlie with a Z. I am partial to the Goat Guy and those goats, but LeZlie will do until the goats come home. Daniel goes to a party at LeZlie's home for most of the five days that these episodes cover. Daniel snorts some cokes, snuffles some women, and shoots skeet with CDs from the eighties. I think that Kiss got hit, but Lynyrd Skynner and the Free Bird flew away.

Daniel has a moment during the skeet shoot that is echoed at the end of the sixth episode. We see Daniel at the creek where the girl was raped and killed, and he daintily scarfs down a magic mushroom. Then we see Daniel in a black hoodie and converse sneakers sitting meditatively on the bank of the creek with his face in shadow and a girl's voice calling to him.

Was Daniel a secret druggie in high school? Was the hooded Daniel a flashback to the night of the girl's death? Daniel can shoot skeet CDs, was he really capable and guilty of the girl's death if not her rapes? Was Daniel just pretending to be Darth Vader, but really became Darth V because of Evil Marijuana?

Daniel and the other guy from high school, who is still alive and dragging the creek and filling his tires with air at the gas station that Daniel was filling his Mom's car with gas, meet at the gas station and talk about the weather. But oh the Subtext on that scene!

Next episode---one of the kitchen walls gets a prime coat before Daniel has to negotiate his freedom with the prosecutors.
