What I Saw: Rectify

Apr 26, 2013 14:32

Rectify is a Sundance Channel television series of one season and six episodes that is currently running on Monday nights. I have, through the magic of the Internets, seen all six episodes. I don't know if they will be making anymore.

Salt of the Earth kinda men friend, I see.

I was going to make a joke about how long it takes to dry sea water to make epicure French sea salt and the slowness of the show, but... I won't. I will just step away from that.

The three year old girl murderer turns out to be all the FUN that Daniel has in prison. So some nutty religious person might say that God had him murder that little girl...now, I am making some really stupid religious arguments and analogies.

I will say that when Daniel does manage to speak, he is given some very interesting and intelligent things to say. You really do believe that here is a man who spent 19 years in a small cell (like one of those Catholic Saints who live in holes in the ground for the rest of their lives to better serve Jesus and Mary) contemplating Life from afar.

So this show is slow going for the first episode or so, but I hope that you stick with it and let me know what you think about it. As an inducement, the guy who plays Daniel is very pretty. He reminds me of Tom Welling---same shape of face and chin and similar noses. He is very very pale, but that is due to prison. No suntan booths on Death Row and no windows.

The six episodes take place over Daniel's first six days as a free man again. He does say several times in the series that he doesn't know if he can live in the Outside World. The ending of the first season makes you think that he has got to something valid there.

I like one of the actors in it Clayne Crawford, so I intend to give it a real chance. My problem is that the footage is so grainy. It's like they took the digitial footage and rubbed it against rocks.

Mr. Crawford is excellent in this. He is the jealous step brother and sort of a villain although he isn't. You understand his motivations and he does have a point. You also understand the dead girl's brother's motivations and respect them to a degree. It is the other villains such as the state senator, about whom you just don't know enough to evaluate their feelings and actions.

I will say this, if this is too slow a going for you at first, sample the fourth or fifth episode with the Goat man. That is a wild ride and moves along well. It also has a lot of Mr. Crawford in it.

You are such a visual person---I can tell from all your photographs that you take. ;-)

I didn't notice any impairment in the footage, but you could be seeing it from Daniel's viewpoint there. Daniel does have to be fitted for glasses in the second or third episode and the footage might improve for you.

Great review.

Thank you m'am.
