My first job hunt began at 19, looking for a part time job after 'A' levels. I remember walking into a Delifrance outlet in my estate and filled in the application form to be a wait staff.
At the time, the average hourly pay for a floor service staff was $5 an hour.
Once again, as naive as I was, I thought I should be worth more so I put my expected hourly rate at $7 and submitted the form.
Needless to say, I never got a call back. I eventually found another job scooping
Gelato at $5/h and later after uni, I was a waitress again, also at $5/h.
Anyway after three and a half yrs of proper work experience, I recall this story again because I want to remind myself that although work tasks can sometimes become mammoth and overwhelm us, make us feel undervalued or unworthy, today I choose to remember the time I believed I was worth more.
Still am today! Inherently so. Not because of my work efficacy or skill sets, but deep down inside, as a person, I know I am worth more.
Unlike the waitressing industry, in today's pmeb job market, hirers can pay more for employees. So ask away! No harm asking for what you're worth.
