After reading and digesting "Plastic Swords and Pentacles: Chivalry and the Rearing of Pagan Boys" the other day,
http://www.wiccawicca.com/index.php?id=63 , I have been thinking about raising my sons to be persons of character, esp. the youngest who has a great deal of potential.
In an interview,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqFCH5tTv5g Governor Tim Kaine talks about how being a missionary changed his life and shaped his character. I can certainly see the wisdom in that - for example, all the young LDS men go out as missionaries, and now I understand why it's particularly important.
My husband and I don't have the opportunity to send our young men out on missions, but there is the Peace Corps. I am considering that while young men from Pagan and atheist families do not go on mission, perhaps perhaps part of a young man's development into a manhood of character chould include some sort of "mission". Perhaps the Peace Corps is an option. They provide full health care and college loan deferment. I believe the commitment is for 27 months.
I really don't know of any other comparable organization that provides this type of opportunity, (except perhaps the military,) unless a person simply made a commitment to volunteer for an organization like Habitat for Humanity for a year or two. But the Peace Corps is an organization that provides some benefits and looks after the volunteers.
