Masterpost

It was a Wednesday night when Jack was climbing into bed, notebook spread across his legs as he went over the material for History that he was supposed to be on the test the next day.

He’d spent the night with Zack, just chilling around the house. Joyce had made them a nice dinner and they all sat down and ate together like they used to.

The temperature was starting to warm up considerably, all the snow melting and the soft, muddy surface below was exposed. Jack hated it because he couldn’t walk anywhere without tracking slop behind him and dirtying his shoes.

But he curled into his bed, Delilah jumped up and curling into his stomach area for warmth and snuggles.

“Hey, girl,” Jack called and her ears perked. “Did you know that George Washington was gay?”

She tilted her head to the side like she was calling bullshit.

“Yeah, I have no idea if that’s true or not,” Jack admitted, laughing at her actions. “But if I get asked on the test tomorrow, I’m going with yes.”

She made a grunting noise and laid her head back down. Jack laughed at her again, reaching a hand down to scratch at her ears.
He shut the light off and laid down too.

About midnight, he awoke to a shrill ringing, which, as he sat up in his bed, he found to be his cell phone on the bed-side table. The little bit of light it gave off was bright against the pitch blackness of the room around him. He picked it up, forgetting to look and see who it was because if they were calling late, it was urgent.

“Hullo?” he mumbled, wipping at his eyes to wake himself up a little.

“Jack?” A voice squeaked back and Jack instantly closed his eyes, his stomach dropping.

“Alex?” Jack asked back, pressing the phone tighter to his ear as if that would make the teacher talk.

“Yeah, hey,” Alex said quietly through the line. “I can’t talk long, it’s five am here and I have to get stuff ready for class.”

“You got a new job?” Jack asked, biting his bottom lip. He didn’t care anymore about admitting things to himself, it felt god-damn-fucking amazing to hear Alex’s voice again - made him feel accomplished.

“Yeah, I’m an English teacher again,” Alex confirmed, laughing a bit. Jack couldn’t help but think it was kind of adorable, that laugh. He seemed to sound comfortable and content, which gave Jack a bit of releif.

“That’s cool,” Jack said simply, not really knowing what else to add.

“Hey, I know it’s cliche, but could you do something for me?” Alex asked after a second of silent and obvious inner debating.

“Uh, sure, Lex,” Jack agreed, nodding though Alex couldn’t see. He didn't really question it; he'd come to learn that it was just better to go with what Alex wanted, especially when he hadn't talked to him for so long.

“Could you get up and go upstairs?” Alex asked, and Jack quirked an eyebrow.

“I guess.” He tried to get out of bed without waking his dog, but it was in vain; she instantly stood, following him up the stairs. Jack was half expecting to see the man, sitting across the couch waiting for him, but Alex spoke again through the phone then.

“Okay, go outside and look at the moon,” he paused for a second while Jack opened the door, greated by the bitter cold. “Isn’ it perfect?”

Jack moved his dark eyes upward, landing on the big, bright circle of white in the sky, flawlessly full and luminecent.

“Yeah, it is,” Jack agreed, kind of taken aback by it. He was pretty sure he’d never seen it so full in his life.

"I know it’s stupid, but when I look up at it, I think of you,” Alex said, voice cracking a little as he spoke. Jack didn’t know what to say, he was kind of starting to choke up a little when Alex whispered, “I miss you, Jack.”

It took him a second to respond, pushing back the heat in his throat. “I miss you too, Alex.”

Silence again for about a minute’s time and Jack wasn’t sure if the teacher had hung up until he spoke again.

“Do you still love me, Jack?” he asked, and Jack could practically see Alex, bathing in the hesitance and how unsure he was.

Jack just shrugged, realizing that Alex couldn’t see him.

“Yeah, Alex. I do,” he assured, biting down on his bottom lip. “I do love you.”

He heard Alex let out - what he hoped was - a relieved breath, but he didn’t say anything after that until Jack cleared his throat, ushering him on.

“I  love you too,” Alex answered.
