Love and other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape is a very interesting poem written only by the titles and artists names of famous love songs. This is a very fun and interesting poem for it goes through all the many phases one can go through when they are either in a relationship, looking for one, or just got out of one. It touches on all of the numerous human instincts we go through when dealing with love or just a simple relationship. What is so interesting about this text is that almost anybody who has experienced a relationship can relate to it at one point or another for it is the cycle of relationships. The songs such as “Nothing Compares to You” and then following that “My Girl” is just an example of who Amanda Holzer creates this story out of the simple usage of famous song titles. Looking at the poem as a whole all you see is a list of mix tapes, but once you begin to look at each song’s title and ignore the artist you uncover the story that is underneath it. Amanda Holzer also shows the reader how common and popular love songs are to people and how we find ourselves knowing most of the songs for we have listened to it and felt a very similar way to the artist for whatever reason given. This piece of text truly reveals how us humans are obsessed with love and is around it all the time, but yet still can’t control it.
