I realize I am irrationally trying to protect a fictional character from another fictional character...but I read the other comments and know it's not just me....so I have to think that you want us all to feel this in some small way, because your words are never incidental.
These are a few lines I found noteworthy:
Ryan’s words are like the tips of icebergs - so much of what he says lies buried deep beneath their surface. -- so very true. Nice observation.
Cards (but no photographs) from his bris. -- ok, this? Just plain funny
She looks across at the teenager who has become like her second son, and considers what a powerful modifier ‘second’ is. She knows Ryan’s revelations about the letters are not meant to sting, but they do. They underscore how in the Harts’ world, Ryan is an only son. -- well, yes...and how much easier it is to give attention to an only child than to share. And in the first line, you went on to qualify 'second'....but I'm stuck on the word 'like'. Isn't this what the whole story is about? Shouldn't he BE a son to Kirsten, not just like one? K...I'm shutting up now...f,d,f!
