For those of you who know me at all ... you know that Dr. Martin Luther King Junior is one of my heroes. I his honor I hope everyone will take a moment to reflect upon some of these quotations and apply his spirit to our lives to continue his fight for equal rights and change in our world.
Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.
All labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.
A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defence than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.
An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.
Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.
Hatred paralyses life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.
We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.
All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem.
Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.
Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.
(ok so i tried to just pick a few really great quotations... but you can tell I had trouble. I hope at least a few of them stuck out and inspired you.)
Happy Martin Luther King Junior Day! :)
